Bathhouse Cafe, Restaurant & Bar in Queenstown caught my eye the first time I cycled past it because of it's unusual architecture. I planned to paint it for about a year and just never quite got around to it! Today was the day. Freezing myself in Winter! Thanks to Bathhouse for the permission to sell.

The Saint Marks Baths opened at 6 St. Marks Place in the East Village of Manhattan in New York City in 1913. Through the 1950s, it operated as a Turkish bath catering primarily to Russian-Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side. In the 1950s, it began to have a homosexual clientele at night and by the 1960s, it had become an exclusively gay bathhouse. In 1979, the bathhouse was refurbished, and the name was changed to New Saint Marks Baths, though it continued to be known simply as Saint Marks Baths. In 1981, the neighboring building was purchased, with plans to expand. The AIDS epidemic caused some activists such as Larry Kramer to urge its closing, and St. Mark's Baths would be shuttered on December 7, 1985.

The last gay bathhouse in San Francisco, which was located across the street at 3244 21st St. It closed at the height of the AIDS crisis in 1985; the structure burned down a year later, and the site is now the location of an apartment building.

The Continental Baths was a gay bathhouse in the basement of The Ansonia Hotel in New York City, which was operated from 1968-1976 by Steve Ostrow. It was advertised as reminiscent of "the glory of ancient Rome". While the baths utilized the Ansonia's lavish Gilded Age décor for a Roman style bath, it is probably best remembered as being an influential offbeat music venue.

Vintage Man's Country once popular Chicago Bath House. Opened in 1973, Man's Country was the dream of Chuck Renslow, the entrepreneur and gay rights figure. Renslow founded the annual International Mr. Leather contest and the Leather Archives & Museum in Rogers Park. While the AIDS epidemic prompted other U.S. cities to close gay bathhouses in the 80s, Man’s Country persisted.
