Remembering the Boston Department Store. The flagship store was in Downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Milwaukeeans have fond memories of the Christmas window decorations and the whole top floor that was turned into Toyland, with a monorail that the kids could ride that hung from the ceiling.

Oh, I miss Boston Store. Maybe more than I miss Bergner's. Or Field's. So many suits bought there. Ah well, now I have...Dillard's?

Remembering the Jordan Marsh Department Store. Jordan Marsh & Company was an American department store chain that was headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts and operated throughout New England. It was founded by Eben Dyer Jordan and Benjamin L. Marsh in 1841.  After World War II, the management of Jordan Marsh announced that it would build a new store in downtown Boston. It would take up a full city block. Covering an area larger than Harvard Stadium, it would have two stories under ground; another 14 would rise into the air. It would have all the latest technology, including air conditioning, automatic doorways, block-long show windows, and radiant-heated sidewalks. They advertised it as “New England’s Largest Store.”

Remembering the great Filene’s Department Store. Filene's was an American department store chain founded by William Filene in 1881. The former Filene's flagship store at Downtown Crossing in Boston is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The success of the original full-line store in Boston, Massachusetts was supplemented by its off-price sister store Filene's Basement in 1908. Filene’s Basement became a much-visited tourist attraction. Starting in 1947, the Boston flagship store held an annual one-day bridal gown sale which was dubbed The Running of the Brides.

Opened in 1890 by William Filene, the store got its start as Filene's Sons and Company in 1881, selling fancy goods and women's ready-to-wear apparel. Sons Edward and Lincoln made the retail giant into a household name after inheriting the store in 1901. This scan is from a 50 year old Filenes bag and has some of the inconsistencies of the original design. Colors have been changed for the purposes of this design.

Bradlees Department Store, more commonly known as Bradlees, was a discount department store chain based in Braintree, Massachusetts, which operated primarily in the Northeastern United States. Bradlees sold various retail items in its stores, including clothing, jewelry, health care, beauty products, footwear, furniture, electronics, housewares, and bedding. At its peak in 2000, Bradlees operated over 105 stores in seven states across the Northeast, with close to 10,000 employees. The chain went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2000, with all of its stores eventually closed by March 15, 2001.

Turtle's Records and Tapes was all the rave in Georgia and Florida back in the '80s and '90s!

Filene's opened its famous "Automatic Bargain Basement" in 1909, which became a much-visited tourist attraction. Goods were marked down according to an automatic schedule; an item that had been on sale for 12 days was marked down by 25 percent, after 18 days by 50 percent, after 24 days by 75 percent, and after 30 days it was given away. Famous for the Running of the Brides which was a one-day sale of wedding gowns, garnering local media attention because of the sight of hundreds of brides-to-be scrambling for bargains. The store stocked thousands of gowns for that day and marked them down drastically; gowns were non-returnable. Prices ranged from $249.00 to $699.00, marked down from retail prices as high as $9,000.

Who can forget those commercials running at 1 in the morning on Channel 56? Great gift for anyone with nostalgiac memories of the Boston area of yesteryear.
