Johnny Gilbert was the over the top Canadian bushranger that worked alongside Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall. His propensity for violence and love of frivolity and lawlessness led him to and early grave.

Joe Byrne is remembered as the lieutenant of the Kelly Gang, a flash outlaw fond of song, alcohol and opium. An Outlaw's Journal portrays the side of Joe forgotten by many history books: the lover, the poet, a son struggling to live up to expectations thrust upon him in a world he doesn't fit into. Grounded by his love for his girlfriend Maggie, Joe's story is one of drama, romance and tragedy.

Maggie worked at the Vine Hotel in Beechworth as General Servant, where she had been employed (I believe) since 1876. While the circumstances of their first meeting are unknown, Joe was certainly taken by the young woman and she with him. Throughout his outlawry, Joe regularly visited Maggie in her quarters at the Vine, with locals believing her lover to be Paddy Byrne, until she was overheard calling her late night visitor ‘Joe’.

Ned Kelly emerged from the forest at Glenrowan behind the police lines in the early morning of June 28th, 1880 in an attempt to get back to his gang at the inn. Dressed in his armour he fought the police for half an hour single-handed before he was brought down by buckshot to his exposed knee.

One of Australia's most prolific outlaws, Ben Hall, committed hundreds of offenses from robberies to holding up entire towns in the span of three years. He was the most wanted man in the British Empire until he was gunned down by police in 1865.

Behind every great man is an even greater woman and that is ever present in the case of Captain Thunderbolt. Fred Ward's wife Mary Ann was a half-Aboriginal woman who assisted her outlaw husband with their young kids in tow. Dressed in men's clothing, she poached cattle and helped to throw police off the Ward's trail with her daring horse riding. Mary Ann Bugg was one of the only female bushrangers and one of the greatest figures in Australian history.

Although brief, Ben Hall's career was prolific and intense. With danger around every corner he had to be on his guard at all times and we see him here during a shootout with the police.

Martin Cash was Tasmania's premier outlaw in the 1840s. With his mates Lawrence Kavanagh and George Jones he led a life of crime throughout the colony before his arrest in Hobart and subsequent imprisonment on Norfolk Island.

The gentleman bushranger that terrorised the wealthy landowners of Van Diemen's Land in the early 1820s, escaped from Hell's Gates, and stole the hearts of women across Tasmania.

Steve Hart was a jockey and larrikin who threw away a respectable life to take up arms with his mate Dan Kelly as a bushranger. Aggressive and impulsive, Steve was effectively the gang's attack dog, helping Ned to persuade his victims into cooperating.

Master of the bluff, Harry Power was a bushranger with a proud record of never shedding blood. He frequently baffled authorities with his ability to traverse vast distances between robberies and is known as Ned Kelly's tutor in bushranging.

Ned Kelly, for those of you who haven't heard of him, is an Australian hero. Back in the 1800's he stood up to English authorities who were fond of picking on his Irish ancestry. After numerous bank hold-ups and shooting a policeman, Ned was caught and hung in Melbourne Gaol. A famous quote of Ned's on the day of his death is "Such is Life". With his pompadour hair and bushy beard, it recently occurred to me that Ned was the first hipster which is what inspired this design.

Johnny Gilbert was the over the top Canadian bushranger that worked alongside Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall. His propensity for violence and love of frivolity and lawlessness led him to and early grave.

For months Frank Gardiner, The Darkie, had been plotting a big heist. He knew that the key to a big haul was to attack one of the gold escorts from the diggings but they would be heavily guarded so he would need to be able to overwhelm the security. So, as 1862 trundled along Gardiner built up a gang for his heist that could hardly be rivaled by any police escort. Among the men were Gardiner’s wingman Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall, John O’Meally, Henry Manns, Alexander Fordyce, Daniel Charters, and John Bow . In that time Gardiner had been bouncing ideas around with Gilbert and O’Meally, finally devising a plan as winter set in.

Operating around Lambing Flat in the 1860s, Peisley was the sidekick of Frank Gardiner, who he did time with on Cockatoo Island, until he decided to branch out on his own. Peisley's penchant for booze proved to be his undoing, committing a murder in a drunken rage that resulted in him going to the gallows.

After the death of Sergeant Parry at Black Springs, the Hall Gang were wanted for murder. This reward notice was published in 1864 and signalled the beginning of the end for the bushrangers.

Self-proclaimed "Prince of Tobeymen", Frank Gardiner was a kind of godfather of bushranging. Gardiner introduced the world to Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall as well as pulling of one of history's largest gold robberies at Eugowra Rocks. His life was full of adventure and misfortune.
