In April 1972, Troop H/10th Air Cavalry was placed under the 17th Aviation Group at Pleiku. The troop was located at Lane Army Airfield near An Son (14 km west of Qui Nhơn in Bình Định Province). H Troop aircrews conducted aerial reconnaissance, hunter/killer, and search & destroy missions using OH-6 Cayuse (Loach), AH-1 Cobra (Snake), and UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) helicopters

1965, the battalion was reorganized as an airborne and airmobile unit and immediately deployed to the Republic of Vietnam as the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry, the "Jumping Mustangs". Additionally, F Troop, 8th Cavalry served as a recon element for the 196th Infantry Brigade.

On 1 August 1965, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) was sent to Vietnam. Aviators participated in 14 campaigns and received seven decorations during its seven years of duty in Vietnam. The first Army aviator to be awarded the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War was a member of the 227th Aviation Battalion.

The Air Cavalry Troop, Troop D, joined the Squadron in January 1968 in Vietnam. The unit remained in the field continuously during Vietnam from 1967-1972.AT Fire Base Mary Ann - 28 March 1971 - Although artillery had been firing in defense of Mary Ann since soon after the first word of the attack reached brigade headquarters, it was 03:25 before the first air assets appeared overhead. The 11th Airborne division was inactivated for the final time on 29 June 1965. The colors and subordinate unit designations of the 1st Cavalry Division were transferred from its post in Korea to Fort Benning, Georgia, where they were used to reflag the 11th Air Assault Division into the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Concurrently, the personnel and equipment of the 1st Cavalry Division.

On 14 January 1966, the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, was relieved from assignment to the 171st Infantry Brigade and assigned to the 25th Infantry Division "Tropic Lightning" at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment came back into existance originally organized as G Troop, 17th Cavalry Regiment, and the 7th Squadron of the 17th Cavalry was formally reactivated on 25 November 1966, and equipped and trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky. At the same time, the Squadron adopted the nickname "The Ruthless Riders."
