95 1/2 WMET was a Chicago-based radio station that started in the 1970s. Initially licensed by the Moody Bible Institute after WWII, the station changed hands and formats several timesover the years as the need for sister stations and station variety shifted. In 1976, the call letters were changed to WMET, but still featured the 95.5 slot. Although they were still playing top 40 hits, they branded themselves as a rock station. From 1979-1985, the station took on a more heavier rock format, but again was sold and rebranded to contemporary hits. The station struggled to find an identity playing short periods of oldies, new age, smooth jazz, Spanish language music, and finally country through a variety of new owners.

Vintage 90s Houston 97 Rock

From 1980 through 1986, Houston's KSRR operated as '97 Star FM,' as a largely top 40 station. Late 1986 saw the station relaunched as '97 Rock Houston,' and transitioned to an album oriented rock (AOR) format, using the slogan 'Kick Ass Rock 'N' Roll!' 97 Rock brought in national talent to host a new drive time morning show, and the station successfully competed against the AOR format stations in the Houston market to be the dominant FM radio broadcaster.

FM is a 1978 dramedy film about internal conflicts at the fictional Q-SKY FM, a top rock n roll radio station in Los Angeles. When the station's owners decide to introduce recruitment ads for the military, despite the protests of its manager, the rebellious DJs are determined to fight back, no matter the cost. Released in theaters in the spring of '78, the film did poorly at the box office, but its soundtrack was a platinum-certified, selling well over one million records.

On November 8, 1968, classic music station 98.5 FM KXRQ emerged from months of silence as KZAP after being purchased by Lee Gahagan. The new free form radio station quickly found its groove and had an immediate impression on the large college crowd in Sacramento. Playing an eclectic mix of rock 'n roll music, KZAP was a very much a college radio station that appealed to a youth audience that had never really bought into the other commercial stations. The station remained extremely progressive, and was the first station in the United States to air a commercial for condoms and was an early adopter of Stereo Quadraphonic sound technology. When Gahagan unexpectedly died in 1972, KZAP settled into an album-oriented rock format.

Believe it or not, as late as the mid-'60s, the concept of rock music on the radio was foreign to most Bay Area residents. Other than the few top 40 AM stations, there was no outlet for the growing rock scene. After a shakeup at KMPX that lead to a walkout, Metromedia owned classical station KSFR took the KMPX crew in, changed its call letters from to KSAN, and the switched to album-oriented rock music format on May 21, 1968. Suddenly, the Bay Area was hearing albums that they'd never heard on the radio before. The station's youthful, counterculture attitude, came across through both music and commentary, became an integral part of the San Francisco youth experience. KSAN became a groundbreaking, and historic rock station.
