Sunrise at Lake Mungo. The sun rises in the east and first of all touches the dunes on the eastern side of the lunette. The lunette is made up of sand dunes and eroded pinnacles known as The Walls of China which is on the eastern shore of the ancient lake. Lake Mungo National Park is a part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, a chain of dried out lakes that were once strung between Willandra Creek and the main channel of the Lachlan River in Outback NSW. The red iron in the dunes which is emphasised at sunrise by the low angle of the rising sun diminishes as the sun rises and the dunes take on a golden glow and then eventually fade to a typical sandy colour in the extreme heat of full sun . The dunes are either side of the dry Tsauchab River. Stretching 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) in length, but averaging a width of only 110 kilometres (70 miles), the Namib Desert is home to the highest sand dunes in the world up to 340 metres high.
