This is taken in front of the main gate that leads inside the famous Stirling Castle. It was too late to visit it but I definitely enjoyed the view and the amazing sunset! Would you like to travel to beautiful Scotland?

High above Princes Street, nestled beside Edinburgh Castle, there have probably been dwelling houses for well over 1,000 years. The present buildings, however, only go back to a redevelopment in the 18th century. Since there were no official planning controls in those days, there is a delightful mix of architectural styles, including an octagonal “Goose-pie” house built by Allan Ramsay the poet. There is a beautiful spacious flat, with a panoramic 360 degree view, designed by Sir Patrick Geddes (regarded as the “father” of town planning) which was created to encourage the University professors to return to the “Old Town” of Edinburgh.

Built between 1573-88 on the orders of the Regent Morton after the Lang Seige, The Half Moon battery is an impressive part of the castle's defenses, giving the cannons a wide angel of fire behind tall, sloping unsurmountable walls. Behind the Half Moon Battery is the Royal Palace. The Palace was the official royal residence of the Stewart kings and queens. Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to the future King James VI (and 1st of England) on 19th June 1566 in a small chamber room known as Queen Mary's Room. The Palace is home to the Scottish Crown Jewels.

The clock tower and spire of St Cuthbert's church just off Lothian Road, Edinburgh, with edinburgh castle in the background. Tradition has it that St. Cuthbert, the famed monk-bishop of Lindisfarne, stopped by the shores of the Nor' Loch (a lake now replaced with Princes Street Gardens) just below Edinburgh Castle and built a little hut there. This is the site of St. Cuthbert's Parish Church, whose current incarnation dates from the 19th century but is built over at least six earlier places of worship. The first record of St. Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh is in 1127, when King David I gave all the land below the Castle to St Cuthbert's. Three wonderful buildings for the price of one, all in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. St. John's Church at the corner of Princes Street and Lothian Road. The church was built in two years at a cost of £18,000. The foundations were laid in March 1816 and the completed building was consecrated on Maundy Thursday, 19 March 1818. The site, which was a market garden, was bought from the Town Council. The owners of property on the north side of Princes Street obtained in 1816 a private Act of Parliament, which prohibited the erection of any further buildings on the south side and secured their open view of the castle. Behind St. John's Church, you can se the clock tower and spire of St Cuthbert’s church just off Lothian Road.

The Ross Fountain is a cast-iron structure located in West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, UK. It was installed in 1872 and restored in 2018.

An old cemetery lying on Calton Hill in Edinburgh which opened in 1718 for the burial of tradesmen and merchants. It was extended in 1767, but divided in 1818 by the building of Waterloo Place (the street at bottom right). The larger part lies to the south of Waterloo Place and includes a number of grand and interesting memorials. An enormous obelisk (shaped liked Cleopatra's needle) by Thomas Hamilton (1784 - 1858) remembers the political martyrs of 1793, who were 'transported' for sedition. The classical monument (the round one) to philosopher David Hume (1711-76) was built in 1777 by Robert Adam (1728-92) and the Emancipation Monument (1893), comprising a bronze of Abraham Lincoln with a grateful freed slave.

Ok, I admit it, this image is inspired by Chris Clark's wonderful image Tree of Light. I even pinched his title, aren’t I awful - hehe. Taken in Princes Street Gardens during the very enjoyable redbubble meet in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th April 09. It was a great day out with a bunch of very talented photographers.
