The Forth Road Bridge at South Queensferry, Scotland at sunset in early August. Located 9 miles (15 km) west of Edinburgh, the Forth Road Bridge spans the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry. When it was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on the 4th September, 1964, the bridge was the longest in the world outside the USA. The bridge is nearly 1828m (2000 yards) long while its main span, of 1006m (3300 feet), is the tenth longest in the world; its towers are over 150m (500 feet) high. The deck, which carries four lanes of traffic with two walkways, is suspended from cables which are 5.9cm (2.3 inches) in diameter and composed of 11,618 high-tensile steel wires, giving a total length of wire of 49,280 km.

The road bridge over the River Forth at South Queensferry, Scotland as it disappears into the fog. The Forth Road Bridge (built in 1964) is a suspension bridge in east central Scotland. The bridge spans the Firth of Forth, connecting the capital city Edinburgh at South Queensferry to Fife at North Queensferry. The toll bridge replaced a centuries-old ferry service; rail crossings are made by the adjacent and historic Forth Rail Bridge. Best viewed Larger.

The two Forth Bridges cross the River Forth between South Queensferry, Lothian and North Queensferry, Fife, Scotland. Many small tankers and container ships navigate these waters up to the port at Grangemouth in Falkirk District. Grangemouth is known for its large petrochemical plant (which includes the oil refinery owned by Ineos), one of the largest in Europe. Grangemouth Port is also one of the main ports in the UK with the largest container terminal in Scotland, with 9 million tonnes of cargo handled through the dock facilities each year. A view from the Firth of Forth of the three bridges linking Fife on the north bank and Lothian on the south. In the foreground is the new Queensferry Crossing taking the M90 over the estuary. This bridge, opened in August 2017 is the longest 3 pier cable-stayed bridge in the world - 1.7 miles long! Behind it is the Road Bridge opened in September 1964 and in the background the unmistakable cantilever structure of the Forth Rail Bridge which was opened in 1890 - now a World Heritage Site!

The Rail Bridge was opened in 1890 and looks set to continue for another hundred years or so. The Road Bridge was opened in 1964 and it has so many problems that a new bridge crossing will be built just to the west of the present Road Bridge. Looking from the elevated position of the Back Braes over the rooftops of South Queensferry, Scotland. To the locals the town is The Ferry. I have lived here for the last 23 years, so just four more generations and my descendants may be accepted as locals. On the High Street, in the center of the shot is the top of the Jubilee Clock Tower (built 1887) and at the back of the shot is the ramp leading onto the Forth Road Bridge.
