On the way out of old fort Stevens, My son and I noticed some old brick foundations. Since I was driving I pulled over and had him hop out and snap some pictures. I have always been interested in archeology, and wish I knew the history behind the building that used to stand on this foundation.there is something intriguing that incites the curiosity in old ruins and dilapidated buildings.who lived here or worked here, what were they like? in the meantime we are left to gaze in wonder at the fern filled foundation that nature has reclaimed, as it glows with autumn colors and basks in the sunlight reminiscing of its glory days.the photo is has a textured border of honey and golden earth tones. Battery control station at fort Stevens near battery Mishler. this would likely have been in use during the world ar II era. The guard rail is now rusty with disuse, and the lookout window is now vacant.

An interesting metal contraption and the underside of the roof of one of the concrete structures seen while climbing the stairs near gun emplacement #2 at Walker Battery, Ft Stevens, near Hammond, Oregon. I think the tour guide said the device in the picture was used to pull the chains used in rotating the artillery piece. Glowing spring sunlight illuminates the dystopic looking scene of weathered, abandoned military equipment and corroding concrete.

deep below ground in Battery Mishler in what was once a harbor defense command post in World War II, and a harbor entrance control post in world War I, is this burnt out and abandoned power hoist. at one point after the site was no longer in use some vagrants went in there and lit a fire to keep warm, and the entire place went up in flames . Now all that remains is a shell of what once was a powerful and vibrant military center. the low lighting in this photo gives it an otherworldly ghostly effect like trying to peer into the past.

It isn't a phone booth or a phone box. It's a telephone room from Battery Mishler which was once a harbor defense command post during World War II. the alcove where the phone once stood now stands empty as theconrete begins to crumble around it. the under ground lighting makes it appear white with blue tones and shadows.

An opening in the ceiling at Battery Mishler, I am not sure what its purpose what or what was the purpose of the metal bars hanging down like some sort of rusty pull up bar.

The vacant metal doors, open doorways, and barred windows beyond the stairway to the gun emplacements seem to bespeak the lives and toils of men long gone who lived and worked here in defense of the Oregon coastline through many decades beginning in the civil war era and on through a world war.

Deep underground in Battery Mishler, Fort Stevens Oregon, behind the furnace, there is a little vent with grass roots coming from the surface, growing down from the vent and nearly touching the floor below.These grass roots grow deep. really deep, into what was at one time an underground harbor defense command post during World War II.low lighting and a long exposure time make the ball of grass roots near the vent appear like a glowing ball of fire in some sci-fi, dystopia of concrete and metal ruins.

Deep underground in Battery Mishler at fort Stevens Oregon are corridors and hallways to explore via an underground tour of what was a harbor defense command post during world War II, and a harbor entrance control post during World War I. It was in use as early as 1890 if I recall correctly. if you take the tour stay close to your guide because it is seriously dark in there and getting lost could be dangerous and spooky. Bring a good flashlight and non slip shoes. The floor is damp the ceilings are drippy with wetness, the beams are rusty and corroded, and the concrete walls are aged with time. A metal ladder and a wooden stick from either a broom or a mop peek out from behind the entrance. Because of the fire several decades ago there was not anything else to be seen in the room besides some holes in the distressed concrete walls that used to lead telephone wires to one of those old switchboards that telephone operators used to plug things into to connect calls.
