Grape Vineyard Hoodies

Vineyard grapes ripening for harvest. I visited a local estate winery in the fall. My goal was to capture images of grapes in the vineyard before harvest. Timing is critical, picking the grapes at peak sugar content in the vineyard for the wineries. Turns out so is my timing for the grapes. This was second trip to the winery for the photo. The year before, I visited the winery and the grapes had been eaten by the birds before they had a chance to harvest! Wine and glass

Rows of grapevines from above in late June in the Peloponnese. Vineyards are usually sited on hillsides, and sloping fields to facilitate drainage, a key factor in successful grape production.

The grapes are mad.

Sometimes depending on the wine makers requirements,during vintage the machine harvester comes to pick. It has to be done at night. The fruit is bashed off the vine carried across on a conveyor belt to the next row where a tractor is towing large bins.... In the heat of the day the bruised fruit would start fermenting. This is the harvester - watching it working is quite a sight. Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed between vines. This artificial smog forms a "blanket" that blocks infrared light, thereby preventing radiative cooling that would otherwise cause or worsen frost.

Merlot grapes are very delicious and sweet when fully ripe and ready for harvest. The vineyard workers were harvesting the grapes right beside me.
