The Little Gem Nebula NGC6818

The bright clusters and nebulae of planet Earth's night sky are often named for flowers or insects. Though its wingspan covers over 3 light-years, NGC 6302 is no exception. With an estimated surface temperature of about 250,000 degrees C, the dying central star of this particular planetary nebula has become exceptionally hot, shining brightly in ultraviolet light but hidden from direct view by a dense torus of dust.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope designed to conduct infrared astronomy. Its high-resolution and high-sensitivity instruments allow it to view objects too old, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This enables investigations across many fields of astronomy and cosmology, such as observation of the first stars and the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.

Spiral galaxy UGC 2885, NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. UGC 2885 is located in the constellation Perseus about 230 million light-years from Earth. There is a bright central region and spiral arms, which have a blue colour due to the formation of hot, young stars. Also shown are two bright foreground stars. UGC 2885 is known as the Godzilla Galaxy because of it's large size, two and half times wider than the Milky Way and containing ten times as many stars.

Launched Dec 25th 2021, the new deep space telescope will replace the Hubble telescope, and inspire a whole new generation of space exploration.

Ultra Deep Field galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope Ultra Deep Field, the deepest view ever taken of the universe in 2004. Each dot of light is a separate galaxy. Some of these are amongst the most distant objects ever seen, over 13 billion light years away, and thus over 13 billion years old. To detect these extremely faint galaxies, the HST focused its ACS and NICMOS cameras on an apparently empty patch of sky for one million seconds. The infrared NICMOS data shows galaxies at a redshift of up to 12, which were among the first objects to form in the universe after its birth 13.7 billion years ago.

Hubble eXtreme Deep Field. Optical and infrared image of distant galaxies in an area of the constellation Fornax, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This combines data from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and Hubble Ultra Deep Field Infrared. The area includes 5500 galaxies, some of them among the most distant known, existing when the universe was only a few hundred million years old. Some are the most distant objects ever identified. Image data from the HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). Image published in 2012.

Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2012. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) infrared image of distant galaxies in a region of the sky in the constellation of Fornax. Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Obtained in 2003 and 2004, this view shows distant galaxies in an area of the constellation Fornax, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The view shows nearly 10,000 galaxies in what is called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The galaxies are of various ages, sizes, shapes, and colours. The smallest, reddest galaxies may be among the most distant known, existing when the universe was just 800 million years old. The nearest galaxies (brighter spirals and ellipticals) are from about 1 billion years ago, when the universe was 13 billion years old. The "Pillars of Creation" are trunks of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, some 7,000 light years from Earth.They are so named because the gas and dust are in the process of creating new stars, while also being eroded by the light from nearby stars that have recently formed. The pillars are composed of cool molecular hydrogen and dust that are being eroded by photoevaporation from the ultraviolet light of relatively close and hot stars.
