I love this view of Hull. I can see all the city from here. A place I have known all my life. A place of childhood. Hull excites me for this reason. Walks of rediscovery and reconnection, a place of dark shadows and ancient cobbles, of exciting post-war architecture and nostalgic pilgrimage. I love this city. This work sets the city centre in one scene, under a East Yorkshire sky.

This terrace of Victorian houses caught my eye, a long terrace, that seemed to stretch towards the horizon and which was basking in a glorious, celestial light. It was an area of Hull I did not know well, and I was exploring on my last evening there. Everything seemed to turn to gold, the air scented with lilac and the evocative fragrance of hot food. I set out to capture the pattern of light on the red brick.

One of the prettiest streets in the old town, Prince Street is a hidden gem, one of Hull's best.

Buildings anchor me to childhood, their faces ageing, their modernity replaced by decay. And yet here they remain, as they have always done so since my childhood. First seen half a century ago, I remember the building, passed fleetingly on the way to pantomimes and toy shops, to dental appointments and the wonders of the museum quarter. The style evokes a halcyon period of hope, of growth and rebuilding after the war, it tingles with the spirit of the 1950s and 60s. Of all the corners and places on earth, Hull is the only one I have always known. I paint it repeatedly, recreating embers of belonging. The Lord Line, Hull, is an artwork by artist Andrew Reid Wildman. He uses a distinctive realist style and tends to depict the architecture of his birthplace in vivid colour. This building sits at the entrance to Hull's former fishing docks. It is a building very much at risk of possible demolition and irreparable neglect.

A favourite street in Hull, a glimpse of how the city used to be once. A Georgian terrace, narrow, full of colorful stucco frontages and filled with a quintessential English charm. The alleyway is overlooked by the church, whose bells fill the air with a haunting magic. A haven of peace. At night, I imagine I can hear the ghostly footsteps of press gangs. On a summer’s morning, the air is filled with blossom. I love this view of Hull. The work is a great souvenir of the city, a perfect gift.

A weekend exploring Hull, wondering streets evocative of another time, snippets of childhood, a fascination with red brick and terracotta chimney stacks, a fascination with symmetry and Victorian dimensions. The day is mine, to explore as I wish, and I find myself in the Avenues, a Bohemian-feeling expanse of roads and alleys, baked under a hot sun in a wide sky. The tiles, the bricks, the walls absorb the day’s heat, releasing their nectar of tar and creosote, intoxicating and Proustian scents. An ice cream van’s jingle, with a bitter-sweet pang, the hum of traffic on the main roads nearby, and the breeze that carries a tang from the Humber and the North Sea. A lovely gift, a great souvenir of Hull.

A walk in West Hull, to Coltman Street, near Hessle Road. The houses are fascinating here, beautiful models of Victoriana, town houses filled with history, stories of fishing, of wars and social revolution. Seagulls call to each other, according to Saxon and Norse legend the voices of the dead. There is a scent of brine, of cooking, of lilac and cut grass. It is quite today, a gentle pulse of city life. I enjoy this walk through the west of Hull, crossing from the Humber up towards the city's Avenues area. This corner of the street boasts a terrace of painted houses that I enjoy.
