Human cell. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of a cross-section through a normal human cell. At above centre is the nucleus (large oval) containing genetic material in the form of DNA. Surrounding the nucleus is cell cytoplasm filled with endoplasmic reticulum. The endo- plasmic reticulum (ER) is a complex system of membranes which form a network of flattened cisternae (cavities). These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of substances through the cytoplasm. Here, the ER is coated in tiny particles known as ribosomes, responsible for the synthesis of cell proteins. Magnification: x10,000 at 6x4.5cm size.

Human embryo. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human embryo at the 16-cell stage on the tip of a pin. The ball of cells (yellow) of the embryo is known as a morula, a cluster of almost identical, rounded cells, each containing a central nucleus. This 16-cell embryo is about three days old. It is at the early stage of transformation from a single cell to a human composed of millions of cells. The cells multiply by repeated cleavage divisions (mitosis) and will form a hollow ball of cells (the blastocyst). Mast cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a mast cell, with vacuoles (dark) containing histamine or heparin. A mast cell is a leucocyte (white blood cell) that contains the chemical mediators histamine, serotonin and heparin. It is part of the immune system, and releases its contents during a localized inflammatory immune response to invading pathogens and during an allergic reaction. Histamine and serotonin cause the symptoms of allergies. Heparin is an anticoagulant which prevents abnormal clotting. Magnification: x7700 when printed at 10 centimetres across.

Each nerve cell comprises a body surrounded by numerous extensions called dendrites. Dendrites collect information from other nerve cells or from sensory cells. Each neuron also has one process called an axon, which passes information to other nerve cells, or to effector cells such as muscle fibres.

Mitosis is the cycle of replication and division by which new body cells are formed. Here the chromosomes (blue) of the parent cell have duplicated and the pairs are being pulled apart by microtubules (spindles, green) to opposite poles of the cell, in a process called cytokinesis. When the cell has split, two identical daughter cells are formed.

Adipose tissue. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of fat cells making up adipose connective tissue. The rounded fat cells (brown, red) are called adipocytes. Connective tissue fibres (orange) have a supporting function for the fat cells. Almost the entire volume of each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet formed from triglycerides. Fat not used up in metabolic processes is housed in these cells. Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin, around the buttocks, thighs and kidneys. Stem cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a clump of human embryonic stem cells (HESCs), showing surface detail. HESCs are pluripotent, which means that they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals they receive, though the cells seen here have not been exposed to growth factors. HESCs are being studied as a way to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson's. These cells were grown in 2005 at the Centre for Life, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. Dendritic cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a protective cell of the human immune system known as a dendritic cell. Dendritic cells process foreign antigens then act like an alarm signal, alerting other immune cells of the body to the infection. The long projections seen on the cell's surface are "feet" to help it move. Dendritic cells found in the upper layer of the skin (the epidermis) are known as histiocytes or Langerhans cells. In the central nervous system dendritic cells are known as microglia, and in the liver as Kupffer cells. Magnification:x 2600 when printed at 10cm wide.

Retinal cells. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a section through the human retina. The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Light sensitive cells are known as rods and cones, and these cells are long and yellow (at upper image). At lower image (pink) are the bodies of nerve cells which transmit impulses from the rods and cones to the brain via the optic nerve. The surface of the retina, from where light enters this layer, is at bottom of image (not seen). Rods contain a pigment, rhodopsin, which is broken down by light and transmits a signal to nerve cells. Cone cells detect colour. Magnification: x1400 when printed 10cm wide.

Eye pigment cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a melanocyte cell with granules of pigment in the light-sensitive retina of the eye. The surface of this melanocyte cell (filling most of frame) has been removed revealing granules of melanin pigment (blue). Covering the cell are numerous finger-like processes called microvilli (purple). This melanocyte forms part of the pigmented epithelium, the outermost cell layer of the retina, beyond which is the highly pigmented choroid. The melanin pigment of this cell absorbs light rays passing through the retina. This prevents interference due to light reflection, assisting with vision. Magnification: unknown.
