Giant kelp in the oceans do not have roots. Instead what they have is a structure that resembles roots called a holdfast. (Another interesting fact: they don't have leaves either, they have blades!) When I first learned about kelp and their holdfasts I immediately thought of the words being formed by the tangled mass reminding one to "hold fast". I've printed this hand-carved lino print by hand then scanned it to make this design.

Kelp's beauty is vastly underrated, along with most seaweeds. From my watercolor kelp and seaweeds pattern, on its own.

Kelp Goose, Chloephaga hybrida, is a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae. It can be found in the Southern part of South America; in Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands. They habitat rocky coasts around their food sources. Males are a white colour, with a black beak, and yellow feet. The females are dark brown, with transverse grey lines on the chest, and yellow feet. Chicks are grey. Seen on Carcass Island. Kelp geese are noted for only eating kelp and will migrate along the coast of South America in order to find kelp, hence the name 'kelp geese'. Kelp geese generally have clutches of 2-7 eggs.
