When we first hiked 400m up a hill in Kâtkâvaara, Finnish Lapland, to see the northern lights, our guide pointed out north and told us that was the direction the lights would come from. Then we turned south and saw this! The lights stretched from horizon to horizon that night…it was stunning.

This year, I chose not to go into the city to see Riverfire, instead choosing the lazy option of rocking up to my friend's house, which has an amazing vantage point for the show, at 6pm. It wasn't as loud and in-your-face as being in the middle of the action, but the wide panorama of fireworks engulfing the entire city was still quite impressive!

I knew it was going to be a good morning when we arrived at Cape Byron Lighthouse 20 minutes before sunrise and the clouds already looked like this! It was incredible luck getting such a good sky on my first sunrise visit to the lighthouse as well.

Six months ago, I stood on the Hamnøya bridge in Norway's Lofoten Islands watching the entire world light up in pink as the sun peeked over the horizon at 11am. 11am in summer couldn't be more different! The dominant colours were blue and green and everywhere around there was the buzz of activity, whether it was the never-ending stream of cars across the bridge or the boats crossing underneath the bridge below. Some things stayed constant though -- the mountains, the rorbuer, and somehow, my location on the bridge so I could get the same composition in two photos six months apart. I finally saw the northern lights in Porjus, one year after I first went there to see them. This visit was under the full moon, so I didn't expect to see much -- but this aurora was so bright that it still sparkled in the already well-lit sky.

The tide was heading out as we shot sunset at Point Cartwright over the weekend, and sometimes the water seemed to be in quite a rush to get back to sea.

The dual falls of Florence Falls in the Northern Territory's Litchfield National Park. Even in the middle of dry season, it was full of water and an awesome spot to spend the afternoon -- as evidenced by the many, many people splashing around me and into the pool as I took this photo!

A lone iceberg does its best to resist the waves trying to suck it back into the sea at Jökulsárlón beach. The black sand, blue ice, and white of the wash as the waves rushed out back to sea were a huge contrast, even in the dying light of the day.

When we hopped in the car around 11.30 on this evening in October, heading west, we could see the beams through the light pollution of Calgary. It just got better as we got further outside the city limits! I think my partner James may actually believe that the aurora is green now (since every other time he's been out aurora hunting it's looked white)! Settings: 6s @f4, ISO 3200

Sullivan Bay is scattered with private jetties that stretch out into Port Phillip Bay and it is a popular site for photographers to shoot sunrise and sunset. When I arrived at the jetty on this morning there was already about six photographers set up waiting for the sun to rise. I took a range of shots including some long exposures.
