Chess Records was an American record company established in 1950 in Chicago, specializing in blues and rhythm and blues. It was the successor to Aristocrat Records, founded in 1947. It expanded into soul music, gospel music, early rock and roll, and jazz and comedy recordings, released on the Chess and its subsidiary labels Checker and Argo/Cadet. The Chess catalogue is owned by Universal Music Group and managed by Geffen Records and Universal Music Enterprises.

Nemesis Records was an American independent record label which released the Offspring's debut studio album, The Offspring, in 1989 as well as their 1991 EP Baghdad. Nemesis was founded by Frank Harrison, distributed by Cargo Records from Canada and closed in 1993.

Roc-A-Fella Records was an American hip hop record label and music management company founded by record executives and entrepreneurs Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, Damon Dash, and Kareem "Biggs" Burke in 1994. Carter issued his debut album, Reasonable Doubt (1996) as the label's first release, in a joint venture with Priority Records. The label has signed and released albums for acts including Kanye West, Cam'ron, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Juelz Santana, Freeway, Jadakiss, Teairra Marí, State Property, and The Diplomats before its dissolution in 2013.

Barrington Levy is a living legend in the reggae and dancehall scene. Known in Jamaica as “the mellow canary” Barrington Levy’s remarkable mellifluous voice has made him a hit maker in both reggae and dancehall. Barrington Levy says, the early 1980s Prison Oval Rock was actually a dub plate for Volcano system, run by the late Henry 'Junjo' Lawes. The sound system was booked for a dance at the oval, very close to the then Spanish Town District Prison (now St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre), and ahead of the event. The name 'Prison Oval' is attributed to it being on the same property as the maximum security Saint Catherine Prison.

Philo Records was a short-lived record company and label founded in 1945 by the brothers Eddie and Leo Messner. Soon after it was founded, the name was changed to Aladdin. Philo's releases included 78 RPM singles of Illinois Jacquet, Wynonie Harris, Helen Humes with the Bill Doggett Octet, Jay McShann and Lester Young, and an album (set of two 78 RPM records) of Lester Young, Nat King Cole and Red Callender.

Rising Tide Records was a record label started by Doug Morris, former head of Warner Music Group, and Daniel Glass, who became President. The label had success in breaking new artists, including the multi-platinum debut of Erykah Badu, Billie Myers and Lost Boyz. Recognizing the changing landscape of the industry, Glass strategically aligned Universal with such independent record labels as Kedar Entertainment, home to Erykah Badu, and Mojo Records, home to platinum artist Reel Big Fish and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.
