Banana ketchup, also known as banana sauce (in export markets), is a Philippine fruit ketchup condiment made from banana, sugar, vinegar, and spices. Its natural color is brownish-yellow but it is often dyed red to resemble tomato ketchup. Banana ketchup was first produced in the Philippines during World War II due to a wartime shortage of tomatoes but a comparatively high production of bananas. In 1975 Manila, one of the buildings that became iconic until it was demolished and redesigned in 2000's was called 'Virra Mall'; its wide, glass-panelled, wedged-pyramid canopy framework acting as a natural greenhouse for the surrounding upper-level plantation underneath served as the mall's iconic structure. The re-interpretation of its logo is a tribute to that by-gone era of modern architecture influence fostered in the Philippine capital.
