Off Roader Hoodies
Description: The Blazer's story began in 1969 when the first K5 rolled out to compete with the similar sport utility rigs on the market. Based on full-size pickup truck frame underpinnings, the Blazer was larger than the competition with an interior that could be configured to hold one to five passengers and for an open-air experience, the rig's fiberglass top could be removed. Options included air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, push-button radio, heavy-duty shocks and springs and an auxiliary battery. In its first year of production, customers could only get their Blazers with four-wheel drive, but chose from three different engines ranging from a 4.1-liter inline six-cylinder to a 5.7-liter V8.
Description: San Jose, California's Up-n-Down Off Road Center wasn't just another garage to get your truck lifted, rather a driving force in the early days of monster trucks. Of course, most of what they did was lift trucks and trick them out, but some of the monsters that these guys turned out are the stuff of legend.
Description: The 720 pickup was Datsun’s first foray into the 4-wheel drive mini-truck market in both long bed and extra-cab variants. It was introduced as a 1980 model and continued until 1986 when the Hardbody style (model D-21) was introduced as a 1986.5 model. Prior models of Datsun mini-trucks were the 521 and 620 which did not offer a 4-wheel drive option. The 720 featured an independent front suspension with torsion bar springs, a leaf spring live axle rear suspension, and a 4 cylinder engine displacing 2.0 liters at introduction, later enlarged to 2.4 liters. The manual transmission on the 720 drove a divorced transfer case that required extra clearance over a married setup, resulting in the 720 4×4 models having a lifted look and riding higher.
Description: Johnson Valley is a 96,000-acre off-road playground in Southern California that is home to two of the toughest trails in America, Jack and Sledge, known collectively as "The Hammers.” Some of the most experienced off-roaders make a trip out here to challenge themselves and their rigs with some of the most unique terrain in the world and more often than not, break stuff. Seeing an unmet need for a hardcore off-road shop in the area, Johnson Valley 4WD opened their doors in Barstow back in the mid '70s, saving enthusiasts from having to drive back into San Bernardino or Riverside for replacement axles, lockers, and whatever else came unglued on the trail. Of course, they weren't just a repair shop, but also a builder of bulletproof rigs.
Description: Interested in both racing cars and motorcycles, Steve McQueen was also an avid off-road racer, and founded Solar Plastics in 1969 as a manufacturer of custom off-road parts. Solar primarily focused on accessories for dune buggies and motorcycles, but one of their more ubiquitous products was the “Baja Bucket” seat. These simple, yet tough off-road racing seats were designed and patented by McQueen to help keep a driver firmly planted while racing over rough terrain while also preventing injuries from a roll-over, all from an affordable injection molded design that put them within reach of racers and enthusiasts alike.
