The Iron Cross became an integral part of the biker lifestyle in the '60s and '70s and still remains popular in many subcultures today. Bikers have always enjoyed shocking the citizenry and the Iron Cross still does this today due to its unfortunate association with the National Socialist German Workers' Party, but let's not forget that it has always stood for honor and service beginning with Frederick William III, King of Prussia, issuing the Iron Cross as a medal for service during the Napoleonic Wars as early as 1813. In both biker and van culture, these crosses can often be found as embellishments forged in metal on custom rides appearing as everything from side mirrors and valve stem caps to sissy bar decorations and fuel tank caps.

When Sonny was pinched for planning a bombing on a rival gang's clubhouse in 1988 and sentenced to prison, his wife produced 'Free Sonny' t-shirts that were all the rage at the time and could be seen pretty much everywhere for a while there.

At their peak, the Gilbert-Hall Gang was a force to be reckoned with, holding entire towns prisoner when the whim took them. Here we see Mickey Burke, John O'Meally, John Vane, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall as they would have looked at the height of the gang's infamy in the early 1860s.

Ned Kelly (December 1854 – 11 November 1880)[a] was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader and convicted police murderer. One of the last bushrangers, he is known for wearing a suit of bulletproof armour during his final shootout with the police.

The most renowned of Australia's bushrangers, Ned Kelly has become a folk hero to many for his anti-authority stance. Known for his suit of home-made iron armour that he wore during the Glenrowan siege with its distinct cylindrical helmet, he is one of the most recognised figures in Australian history.

Joe Byrne was Ned Kelly's best friend and a member of the Kelly Gang. His knack for language was demonstrated in his ability to speak Cantonese and write song lyrics. He transcribed all of Ned's letters and was his most trusted ally. Unfortunately he was also an opium addict who turned on his childhood friend, murdering him in cold blood before dying himself at the siege of Glenrowan.

The little brother of Ned Kelly was a fine horseman, strategic thinker and a far better judge of character than his brother. If Ned had listened to Dan they could have escaped the bloodshed at Glenrowan.

Joe Byrne was a literate outlaw and several examples of his handwriting still exist including his signature. While on the run he referred to himself as the enforced outlaw.

Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel was an American mobster. Siegel was known as one of the most "infamous and feared gangsters of his day". Described as handsome and charismatic, he became one of the first front-page celebrity gangsters. He was also a driving force behind the development of the Las Vegas Strip.

Alexander Franklin "Frank" James (January 10, 1843 – February 18, 1915) was a Confederate soldier, guerrilla, and outlaw. He was the older brother of outlaw Jesse James and was also part of the James–Younger Gang. During his years as a bandit, James was involved in at least four robberies between 1868 and 1876 that resulted in the deaths of bank employees or citizens. The most famous incident was the disastrous Northfield, Minnesota, raid on September 7, 1876, that ended with the death or capture of most of the gang.

The journey from best of friends to murder is one that has inspired many artists and authors for more than 130 years. By June 1880 the rumour and innuendo around Aaron Sherritt had pushed Joe to breaking point, resulting in the most tragic of outcomes.
