During the late '80s and early '90s, music lovers with eclectic tastes were more than happy to label themselves as 'losers' via shirts that projected inward, and pre-empted insults likely hurled by mainstream music fans. Radiating outward from the burgeoning Seattle music scene, you could easily run into fellow losers just about anywhere in the world, which only reinforced just how much of a loser you weren't. Or something.  

Historically, AM radio hasn't typically been associated with anything cool, but in 1982, KJET 1600 AM decided to change that.

Built in 1939, in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, Totem House was originally opened as the Northwesters’ Arts and Crafts Shop. Located across from the Ballard Locks, the shop sold Native American arts and crafts to the earliest tourists of the Locks, attracted by the indigenous pole style architecture and Nuu-chah-nulth and Haida carved totems out front. In 1948, the authentic Native style building was taken over by a family, who opened up a fish ‘n chips restaurant that quickly became a favorite of locals and tourists alike. For nearly 62 years, visitors to the Ballard Locks would grab take out and cross the street to enjoy lunch at the Locks, but sadly, economic pressures forced the owners to shutter the restaurant in 2010.

In 1932, L.J. Skaggs opened PayLess Drug Stores in Tacoma, Washington, which soon expanded across the western United States. Some stores were sold to his brother Samuel "L.S." Olnie Skaggs, along with some colleagues. L.J. Skaggs retained California PayLess Stores, which eventually became part of Thrifty PayLess. The remaining PayLess stores were renamed Skaggs Drug Stores in 1948, and Skaggs Drug Centers in 1965. The chain grew through both acquisition and internal expansion. By 1984, PayLess Drug Stores was the largest independently owned and operated drug store chain in the United States. In 1986, there were 225 PayLess stores, and by 1990, PayLess operated in nine western states before being acquired by a larger national chain.

If you lived in the greater Seattle area in the mid to late '80s, then you probably remember seeing the occasional TV ad for a rock 'n roll hair salon called Rockutz. With an infectious heavy metal jingle that screamed “Rockutz… look like a staaaarrrrrrr!!!!,” it stuck with you, and if you ever decided that you (or your whole band) needed a new hair metal inspired hair do, then you knew that you needed to make the trip out to Rockutz so that you could look like a star.

Founded in 1971 as the Vancouver Nats of the WCHL, the team moved to Kamloops, British Columbia, to become the Kamloops Chiefs in 1973. In 1977 the team moved to Seattle and was renamed the Seattle Breakers. The Breakers played in the Seattle Center Ice Arena, which had a seating capacity of 4,141 for ice hockey. Through eight seasons, the Breakers finished with a regular season record of 225 wins, 319 losses, 32 ties; and a playoff record of 11 wins and 21 losses, although they twice played in the West Division Finals. After the 1984–85 season, the Breakers were sold and renamed the Thunderbirds.

Zesto’s opened their doors in 1952 across the street from Seattle's Ballard High School, and quickly became a favorite place for students to grab a bite and hang out. This classic burger joint featured a menu of burgers and fries, as well as shakes and sodas, and served them up for over 60 years. In the late '80s, Zesto's upped their landmark game by hoisting a '57 Bel Air onto the roof, a move that quickly eclipsed the actual name of the restaurant as people identified it as 'that classic car burger place.'

If you grew up in the Bothell area of Washington State, you're probably familiar with Bill's Dairy, a 30-acre farm that sat along Interstate 405, at Northeast 160th Street for nearly 60-years. Norwegian immigrant Knut Knutsen started out in 1904 by taking his cow around Seattle's Capitol Hill and milking it door to door, eventually making enough money to buy land for the land in Bothell in 1936. Soon the Knutsens were raising their own cows and goats, bottling their own milk and selling it around the Eastside. Bill's Dairy was among the first dairies in the area to pasteurize milk, eventually serving more than 1,000 customers, including local schools and grocery stores, plus Bill's sold direct to residential customers right from the farm.

The venue that would become known as Natacha's originally opened their doors as Perl's Ballroom back in 1934. From a large wooded lot off of Arsenal Way in Bremerton, Washington, Perl's hosted blues and rock n roll acts from across the country nightly for decades. In 1971, Perl sold her business to Bill Sesko, who renamed the establishment for his wife, Natacha. The venue continued to host rock acts throughout the '70s, but in the '80s Natacha's became a popular spot for punk, hardcore, and metal bands. This was turned up to 11 in the mid '80s when Seattle implemented the TDO (Teen Dance Ordinance) which all but made it illegal to host all ages shows in the city, so many shows were now a ferry ride away in Bremerton at Natacha's.

Randy's Restaurant was a kitschy 24-hour restaurant in Tukwila, Washington with an aeronautical theme that served up classic American diner food for 40 years before closing their doors for good. Whether you were a pilot, engineer, or just visiting the museum of flight, Randy's was the go-to spot for breakfast any time of the day, any time of the year. With countless aircraft models hanging from the ceiling and artifacts donated by commercial and military pilots who frequented the establishment, the place was filled with eye candy that was almost as good as the food.
