A view of South Queensferry, the town where I live. Formerly in the county of West Lothian, South Queensferry lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh. It has been an important crossing at least since 1071 when Malcolm III granted free passage at the ‘Queens Ferry’ for pilgrims on their way to St Andrews. A ferry service operated until 1964, the year the Forth Road Bridge was opened. South Queensferry was created a burgh of regality in the 13th century and made a Royal Burgh in 1636. It traded actively with Europe in the 17th century. The hammer throw evolved from its early informal origins to become part of the Scottish Highland games in the late 18th century, where the original version of the event is still contested today. In the contemporary version of the hammer throw, participants use the handle to whirl the hammer around their head and then throw it as far as they can. The shot put is a favorite at all good Highland Games. Competitors throw a large stone of around 20 - 26 lbs in weight as far as they can.

I fell in love with fluffy cows so I had to make some linocuts of them. This is the first Scottish Highland Cow linocut print I have made.

I am old enough to remember the Grassmarket as dark, insalubrious, filled with the ghostly magic of times past. It is different now, lighter, brighter, cleaner. Where smoky pubs once stood, figures nebulous behind frosted glass, there are a plethora of smart cafés and bars, throngs of visitors and the clinking of wine glasses. Still, it is a place of great historical significance, a feeling of wonder as we look up at the castle, erstwhile fortress, dungeon and palace all at once. From all angles history infuses the air, with the spirit of bodysnatchers, Covenanters, witchery and the hangman’s rope. The work is full of colour, of summer heat, and is a wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh, a lovely gift for a home.
