A serene view from Adventfjorden on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard, Arctic Norway. The snow capped mountains overlook the town of Longyearbyen in the Norwegian Arctic. The picture was taken on 8th June 2023 when the midnight sun was beginning to melt the snow in Svalbard.

Taken in June at the start of the Arctic Summer on Svalbard, the snow on the mountains around Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen has started to melt and much of the surrounding ground is now covered in melted snow and ice water. Silence and a cloudless sky create a sense of solitude and isolation in this unforgiving and rugged Arctic landscape. The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is located in the Arctic Ocean some 600 miles from the North Pole. Svalbard was known as Spitsbergen before 1925 when the name was changed and Spitsbergen now refers to the largest island in the group. More than half of Svalbard is covered in glaciers. These mountains, covered in pristine snow are an untouched, silent and serene landscape near to the major town of Longyearben

Inspired by a trip to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, this Vintage, Distressed Design features a Polar Bear atop an Iceberg. 78 13 North are part of the DMS Coordinates for Longyearbyen, the Administrative Centre of Svalbard.

Longyerbyen lies 650 miles from the North Pole in Svalbard. It was established as a mining community in 1906 by John Longyear and totally destroyed in WWII by the German Navy. It now has a population of just over 1,000 and relies mainly on scientific research and tourism although some mining and fishing are carried out. Only a small part of the population are long term residents with the average stay in the town being just over 6 years. Picture taken on 8th June 2023 in Longyearbyen town.

You may be whale watching, looking out for polar bears or simply enjoying the silence of the Arctic landscape and snow covered mountains. A bearded seal taking a rest on the ice flows around the coast of Svalbard in the Arctic. The bearded seal has become something of a redhead because when hungry the seal looks for food on the seabed near the Norwegian island of Svalbard. This is full of iron particles, the particles stick to hair follicles which causes a red and orange colour on the face. Taken near Longyearbyen on 10th June 2023 Nikon D780 and Tamron 150-600mm

The edge of the Nordenskiöldbreen Glacier looks like an alien creature slowly engulfing the rocks beneath, although it is actually retreating from the Billefjord Fjord as the Summer Midnight Sun warms the environment. Nordenskiöld is one of the largest glaciers in the Isfjord region of Spitsbergen, is roughly 16 miles long and is named after the Finnish geologist Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld. Tunabreen is a glacier stream in Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The glacier is about 23 km long, divides Sabine Land from Bünsow Land and merges with the Von Postbreen Glacier as they enter Tempelfjorden. Tunabreen has an incredibly beautiful glacier front that takes the breath away from many. The beautiful blue colour is a contrast to the otherwise brown landscape and mountains. Templet mountain is a vast mountain in Spitsbergen at the entrance to the Tempelfjorden Fjord. The 766 m mountain's name Templet stems from its resemblance to a ruined Gothic cathedral. Nature's beauty unfolds as you immerse yourself in the serenity of the breathtaking Arctic landscape where the majestic mountain stands tall against the backdrop of a serene body of water. Want to get away from it all? How about a lone wooden cabin on the plains of Spitsbergen just outside the town of Longyearbyen surrounded by snow covered mountains? Longyearbyen was established by American John Munro Longyear, whose Arctic Coal Company started coal-mining there in 1906. It is the world's northernmost settlement with a population greater than 1,000 and the largest inhabited area of Svalbard, Arctic Norway. Although there is still some mining, the area depends mostly on tourism and scientific research for it's income. The large yellow building in the image is the town hospital. Pyramiden (Пирамида Piramida in Russian) is an abandoned Russian settlement and coal-mining community on the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. Founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the USSR in 1927, Pyramiden was closed in 1998, as it was no longer economically viable to maintain it. I visited in 2018 and wanted to make something to remember my visit to this surreal Ghost Town. This vintage design aims to capture the some of the atmosphere of this former home to 1000 people.

Vintage Svalbard Dark Season Polar Bear Design. Dark Season (morketiden) in Svalbard runs from 11th of November to 30th of January.
