Swale Hoodies

This is a view of the River Swale just below the Falls at Richmond. North Yorkshire. In winter the river is a torrent, but in summer it drops to a gentle flow, exposing it's rocky bed and inviting paddlers to dip in. This was painted from my own photograph.

The River Swale at Richmond, North Yorkshire

The walls of Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire as they rise above the River Swale. Building began in 1071 by the Norman Alan Rufus as a defence against uprisings in the North which had already incurred King William's wrath and retribution. Further improvements such as the 100ft high keep were puit in place by Duke Conan of Brittany - Rufus' great-nephew in the C12th. By the mid 1500s it had fallen out of use but with the rise of tourism was repaired in the 1800s and is a Grade1 listed building Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The River Swale lends it's name to the local valley of Swaledale, which is one of the northernmost dales in Yorkshire Dales National Park. The river flows through the market town of Richmond North Yorkshire where it flows over a number of falles on its way down the valley towards the North Sea.

Richmond falls are some of the last falls on the River Swale before it joins the River Ure on its way to the North Sea. The waterfalls are near the centre of the North Yorkshire town of Richmond and a popular place for cooling off on hot summer days.

Stone barns and dry stone walls stretch out across this Summer landscape in Swaledale near Reeth in the Yorkshire Dales. The open farm gate and stone wall leading down to the River Swale making its way through the picture. The Yorkshire Dales National Park covers most of the Yorkshire Dales, including this area near Reeth.

Looking over the River Swale as it flows past the town of Richmond in North Yorkshire, to the Culloden Tower built by John Yorke MP in celebration of the English victory over the forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746. It was built in parkland as a folly on the site of an old pele tower (fortified tower) for visitors to enjoy the views from the rooftop terrace. The River Swale continues on its way to join the Ure and the Ouse before flowing into the North Sea at the Humber Estuary. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

I love the landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, and none more so than this view of the upper reaches of Swaledale between Muker and Keld. I passed this spot walking Wainwrights coast to coast (East to West) some year back but only now based a painting on the view. I've painted it in oil on a 12x12 inch board.
