Description: The Ghost Army was a US Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. The unit was given a unique mission: to deceive Hitler's forces and mislead them as to the size and location of Allied forces, while giving the actual units elsewhere time to maneuver. Some of the tactics the Ghost Army created were deceptive inflatable tanks, fake airfields, and complex sound effects. Their story was kept secret until it was declassified in 1996.
Description: The Ghost Army was a United States Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops.The 1100-man unit was given a unique mission within the Allied Army: to impersonate other Allied Army units to deceive the enemy. By the evening of June 6, 1944, D-Day, when they landed on Normandy with the First Army, the first of its detachments were in action against the enemy. By June 23, 1945, the unit was on its way home after having served with four U.S. armies through England, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and Germany. During their tenure, they put on a "traveling road show" utilizing inflatable tanks, sound trucks, fake radio transmissions, scripts and pretense.

The 1st Special Service Force (FSSF) was an elite joint American–Canadian commando unit in World War II, formed by Lieutenant Colonel Robert T. Frederick of the Operations Division of the U.S. General Staff. During the Italian campaign of World War II, it was commanded by Frederick and attached to the United States Fifth Army. In August 1944, the Force was attached to 1st Airborne Task Force (commanded by then Major General Frederick) for the campaign in southern France.
