Founded as Clark & Barker in 1860 as a manufacturer of chairs in Orange, Massachusetts, the firm began designing and producing sewing machines in 1862. Clark & Barker would steadily produce a multitude of sewing machine models over the next 20 years, but it was their 'New Home' model that changed their fortunes as it was the most automatic, easy to use sewing machine ever produced. They claimed it was the world's greatest sewing machine and were so proud of their innovations, that they renamed themselves the New Home Sewing Machine Company. New Home became the most popular sewing machine on the market and by 1937 there were over 7,000,000 New Home sewing machines in use worldwide.
