Mila picked me these flowers 'because she loves me' but also because she wanted me to 'make them in a picture I can put on my wall' - it is lovely that she has such faith in me, that I could take such teeny tiny flowers and turn them into something worth framing... they really were very very very small! A portrait of my son, Reilly (4). This was shot in daylight on my veranda, the background is a gorgeous oil painting completed by my incredibly talented grandmother, Jill Tracey, in 1963. I grew up with that painting, as a child I could not sleep in the same room with it, I was convinced that tigers were about to emerge from the pathway that leads into the painting. : ) As an adult it is a treasured possession, priceless.

A perfect, gloomy, rainy spring day here in South Africa (my favourite) full of lovely, soft, luminous light for portraits. And I haven't done one of these in ages. Mila is getting all grown up, every time I turn around she is taller and smarter and more independent. One day I'm going to be really happy I did these offbeat and otherwise portraits, even though the colours are strange, they are full of the essence of Mila. Classic Speed Graphic press camera. Takes 4"x5" sheet film. One of my favourite cameras in my collection, I set up this as an ode to press photographers of the past. The Speed Graphic was a press camera produced by Graflex in Rochester, New York. As a press camera, in the 1950s and 1960s, the iconic photo-journalists of the Washington Post and the former Washington Evening Star shot on Speed Graphics exclusively. The 1942-1953 Pulitzer Prizes for photography were taken with Speed Graphic cameras. Reilly (3) made miniature... A little Borrower to help me out with finishing off this doodle paisley artwork. Yes, the pencil is heavy, but he is a fine, strong boy and loves to help Mommy! I have been messing around in Photoshop again today. Paisley pattern hand drawn by me and coloured using pencil crayons and ink. Reilly photographed and photoshopped into the picture by me, too. Great fun was had by all. : )
