Narrowboats and houseboats moored just downstream from Newbury in, Berkshire, on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the section between Reading and Newbury was opened. The remainder of the length to Bristol was completed between 1794 and 1810. The canal fell into disuse due to the coming of the railway but was restored and fully reopened in 1990. An artistic view of Padworth Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire in early February.. This lies just downstream from Aldermaston Wharf. It was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of local engineer John Hore of Newbury. Originally a turf sided lock, as many were on this stretch of the waterway, it was rebuilt with brick sides between 1982 and 1984 as part of the canal restoration project. A canal boat moored just below Aldermaston Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This is known as a 'winding hole' where narrowboats as long as 72 feet can turn round. The building on the left was once Strange's Brewery - giving the lock its alternative name - Brewery Lock. The area here is called Aldermaston Wharf and was once a hive of industry with boats loading and unloading their cargoes. Now it's busy with leisure traffic!

The view from the bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Kintbury in West Berkshire. The canal passes through the village by way of Kintbury Lock, taking us to Hungerford, Devizes, Bath and Bristol. This peaceful scene would once have been busy with canal boats taking goods, especially Bath stone, to Reading and London, together with agricultural goods and produce. This was the view in late October with the water vreflecting the golden foliage of the surrounding trees.

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in central Scotland, connecting the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It reconnects the two canals for the first time since the 1930's and it opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link project.

A narrowboat heads upstream on the Kennet and Avon canal near Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. This image was captured on an autumn afternoon with the trees lining the banks turning to gold. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway but was completely restored and reopened in 1990.

The Panama Canal is an artificial 51-mile waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and divides North and South America. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduces the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route. France began construction in 1881, but backed out in 1889 due to high worker mortality rate and slow progress. The United States took over the project on May 4, 1904, and opened the canal on August 15, 1914.

It's a cold winter's morning at Hungerford Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal. There's ice floating on the surface of the water but at least it's bright and sunny! In the foreground is 'The Rose of Hungerford' a wide beam boat which takes visitors for trips along this lovely waterway. Hungerford itself is a picturesque market town in the extreme west of Berkshire, well known for its antique shops.

The canals in Copenhagen. We hung out here, perched on the canals, people watching and taking it all in. I could have stayed there for hours.

A sudden flurry of activity on an autumn afternoon at Kintbury Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire. A boat has just emerged from the lock to carry on travelling upstream towards Newbury, Bath and Bristol, passing moored boats on the way. The waterway passes through the village here - almost through the centre! Tranquil now but once a hive of industrial activity with working boats carrying such goods as Bath stone for the grand buildings in London.

The Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. Beautifully peaceful now but once this was a hive of industry. After the completion of the canal in 1810, trade and commerce increased and a community grew up here which included all-important carpenters who serviced the locks and bridges. The Wharf would have seen exports of timber and agricultural produce and the import of coal, groceries and manufactured goods. However, with the coming of the railway canal trade declined.

The Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. Beautifully peaceful now with a visitors' centre and teashop but once this was a hive of industry! The scene would have been busy with the wide Kennet boats loading and unloading their cargoes of farm goods, coal, building stone etc. Here were also the carpenters so necessary for maintaining the locks and bridges as well as forges for shoeing the boats' horses. Now a boat yard services leisure craft.

Now peaceful, the Wharf was once a hive of activity with boats being loaded and unloaded with coal, building stone, agricultural implements and foodstuffs. A narrowboat in the lock at Kintbury, on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire. The Lock is close to the centre of Kintbury village which lies between Newbury and Hungerford. Ahead of us the canal leads to Hungerford, Bath and Bristol while behind us are Newbury, Reading and the Thames. This image, which has been finished as an oil pastel painting, was captured on quite a busy autumn afternoon.
