In the early 1970s, many FM stations around the country were experimenting with free form music hosted by young disc jockeys, and New York's Capital District Region Q104 FM was one of them. In 1975, Q104 FM had gleaned their niche from the free form programming and began to air album-oriented prog rock. Two years later, Q104 FM debuted the fresh Q104 branding for the station, touting their 'live album rock' format, which continued well into the later years as the station began adding more traditional rock music into the mix.

KCMU began as a student and volunteer-run 10-watt college radio station based out of the University of Washington communications building in 1972 and quickly becoming an innovative, influential cultural force in the Seattle area and beyond. Their eclectic playlists created by an all volunteer staff made it a true beacon of light in the crowded, heavily commercialized FM radio world. Still operating today, albeit under a different call sign and with slightly more commercial leanings, they're still a darling of the independent radio world with countless listeners tuning in locally and streaming from around the globe.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was an American Class I railroad. It was also known as the Rock Island Line, or, in its final years, The Rock.

On March 17, 1981, First Media completed their pourchase of KBLE-FM, and flipped it to an automated Top 40/CHR format as "The Northwest's New 93 FM." On July 8, 1981, KBLE officially launched with live on-air staff. On April 2, 1982, the call letters were changed to KUBE, and the station became known as "KUBE 93 FM". Shortly after the switch to Top 40/CHR, KUBE shot up to the top 5 in the Seattle radio market ratings (occasionally reaching #1 in some books and target demographics) and would later become the dominant CHR station in the Seattle metropolitan area. KUBE primarily competed against two other Top 40/CHR stations in the Seattle metropolitan area, creating an intense rivalry between the three stations throughout the '80s.

On July 12, 1979, 48,000 fans packed Chicago’s Comiskey Park for a doubleheader that included a promotion involving blowing up disco records. The event devolved into a fiery riot when crazed rock n' roll fans stormed the field as part of an anti-disco promotional event when a local disc jockey took the field between games to destroy the records listeners had brought. Once the crate of disco records had blown up, the crowd chanting 'DISCO SUCKS' cheered uproariously and began taking the field. From there they began throwing records and cherry bombs, tearing up the field and stadium facilities and otherwise devolving into an all-out riot that ended up with the Chicago PD riot squad being called in.
