Sweet Exotic Bird Pattern

New Zealand is a melting pot of cultures, including many from the Pacific islands. This is my tribute to some of the beautiful, traditional tapa cloth designs that have been a huge inspiration to me over the years.

The 7572 ft volcano Taranaki is the dominant landmark of the surrounding North Island dairyland province that takes its name. So similar in appearance to Japan's Mt. Fuji it has been used as its stand in by Hollywood movie makers.

Their culture and history is rich and beautiful, and to this day is an important part of New Zealand's culture. Their legends around the creation of the world and this beautiful land have always captured my imagination. A Hei Matau is a bone or greenstone depiction of the Hook of Maui. Māori legend holds that the North Island of New Zealand was once a huge fish that was caught by the great mariner Maui using only a woven line and a bone hook. A typical autumn scene from near my home - golden poplars, an old farm shed and, of course, sheep. Throw in the big mountains and a sliver of Lake Wanaka, and, really, we can't get more local than this.

I love stained glass and the magical way the colours come to life when the light shines through it. In summer and early autumn sunflowers give us such joy, so I've combined these two loves of mine in this piece.

Mostly found in New-Zealand and on the south coast of Australia, the little penguin, also known as fairy penguin and blue penguin, is the smallest species of penguin, measuring between 12-13 inches (30-33 cm) tall and with a body mass of around 3.3 lb (1.5 kg). Those little guys remain faithful to their partner for the full breeding season. The little penguin, being overal of least concern, is considered at risk in New-Zealand. While only the Manly colony (considered critical habitat) remains in NSW, Australia,the species is protected under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995, now replaced by Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

New Zealand mountains reflected in a lake.

One of the things I love most about New Zealand is how quickly the landscape can change. While Mackenzie country is full of golden tussock, the mountains themselves are all rock and snow. In Lindis Pass, which traverses the mountains on the road between Tekapo and Wanaka, the tussock carpeted everything all the way to the peaks of the mountains. It made the whole area feel a bit desolate, yet starkly beautiful at the same time.

Armed with a sketchbook and pens, I recently challenged myself to complete the 3000km Tour Aotearoa, sketching all 30 of the official photo checkpoints. I drew in rain, wind and bbq-hot temperatures, always aware that I had to keep riding on before it got dark! I'm super happy with the results and hope you enjoy them too. Mountain bikers know about Coronet Peak in summer, but it seems like not many people in the general public did! After buying a $15 roundtrip chairlift ticket, we rode to the top and walked a short way up to the peak, where we found this view. The mountains were a beautiful mix of blues and golds and stretched as far as we could see. I was happy standing at this spot to take photos of the sweeping views, but I wasn't exactly game to walk out on that little ledge -- do you think you would be?

These are the submerged foundations of a demolished earthquake-damaged building. It became a nesting platform for rare seagulls.

Painted at the top of Mt John on a VERY hot day! I nice little day hike out of Tekapo where the lakes are different colours.

When we woke up on our second morning at Welcome Flat, we were stunned to see this. The clouds were finally clearing after a day of heavy rain that had kept us huddled in the hut. The only downside was it meant we had to leave the hut, which had its own natural hot pools, and hike 17km back to reality!
