The Milky Way stretches across the sky above the Fingal Head lighthouse in northern New South Wales. We were lucky to be able to see the Milky Way at all, since it was intermittently raining in between patches of completely clear skies.

Natural Bridge is a favourite of photographers across South East Queensland. Pyramid Island in Pyramid Lake, with Pyramid Mountain above...and all of it reflected again below! I'm not sure if there are enough landforms in Jasper named after pyramids...

On our first morning at Emerald Lake Lodge, we woke up to drizzly rain and low clouds. Only a few hours later, this was the view. How could this place not be one of my favourite views in the Rockies?

Water cascading through the rocks at the Torc Waterfall in Killarney National Park. This waterfall is easily accessible via a short track from the main road, which is at the end of the famous "Ring of Kerry" (at least, if you're driving the loop counterclockwise).

A week before the Jasper SkyTram closed for the season and there was already plenty of snow at the top! What we anticipated to be a fairly short trip up turned into a full afternoon of walking around on the top of Mount Whistlers, enjoying the crunch of snow under our feet and the epic views all around us.

Looking at displays like this never gets old -- even after staking out a spot from 7am to make sure I had the best view in the house!

Sunset may have occurred with barely a whimper, but the threatening clouds -- which made good on their threat and dumped snow overnight -- were just as impressive. Camera: Nikon D750 w/ Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED ISO 200, 218s @ f/11

After 10km of hiking through Paradise Valley -- a valley that truly lives up to its name, particularly in autumn, we reached the Giant Steps. This waterfall is breathtaking at any time of year, but the light frosting of snow and golden trees on the distant mountains made it even moreso. Even after two hours -- the most we could spare on our hike, since we still had Sentinel Pass to conquer -- we only saw a small portion of this area. I know which hike will be the top of my to-do list next summer!

Actually, I'm not sure that most fishermen would consider this good weather for fishing. But when I'm fishing (or a passenger in a fishing boat, as I was here), I like it when it's clear with views like this all around! Taken on the Teno River around 10pm on a beautiful summer evening in Utsjoki.

The Norwegian-Finnish border, marked by metal signs bearing the seal of each country, found mid-way across the Sami Bridge in Utsjoki, Finnish Lapland.

After shooting the sunrise in Reine, we had about an hour of sunset light before the sun disappeared below the horizon again. We decided to head towards Å at the very southern end of the islands to see what we could find. What we found was this amazing view in Sørvågen, a village a few kilometers away from Å. The snowfall from the night before was untouched and the light couldn't have been any better!

The Marina Bay Sands Skypark and the Singapore skyline. I was just mesmerised by this view and could have taken lots of photos from all different angles -- that is, if I'd been allowed to use my tripod! I saw plenty of people covertly trying to use theirs but there were too many staff in this area so I didn't even try. Instead I set the camera to ISO 4000 and did my best with what I had!

Some nights do their best to discourage photographers from going out. On this night in June, I headed out to teach a night sky workshop only to be greeted with thick clouds across the entire sky. So, instead of teaching Milky Way photography, I taught the participants about capturing ultra-long exposures of streaky clouds, and then later, about light painting. Just as we were setting up for a few last light painting shots -- and right when I got out my camera to remote trigger a shot while light painting for the participants -- the clouds parted in front of the Milky Way. They stayed that way for 15 minutes before closing back up again. No one could really believe it, but they all agreed that they were happy I'd dragged them out rega...

I've spent so much time at this lookout, patiently waiting for a train to pass by. On this visit, I got out of the car and could already hear the rumble of the train, so I had to run across the road and vault over the barrier to try to catch it. Luckily, I made it just in time!

As I was driving out to a photoshoot, I came across this scene in the small Scenic Rim town of Peak Crossing. I just had to stop to capture the storm clouds, the sun, and the line of shadow the combination of the two was casting across the sky. As an added bonus, as soon as I walked up to the paddock, all the cows turned around and stared at me. I felt a bit like I was trespassing on a cult's meeting!

The reflection of Mount Rundle may have still been covered by the ice, but the spring melt meant that this starry night was perfectly reflected in Two Jack Lake for the first time in months.

The sun peeks through the trees on a gorgeous morning at Emerald Lake. It's hard to believe, but the lake really is that emerald-coloured. There's so many amazing angles on it as well -- particularly because you can walk a full 6km circuit around the lake -- that you can easily spend an entire day exploring there.

The lone tree of Maleny, standing tall in between the silhouettes of the Glass House Mountains, which in turn are lit by the glow of Brisbane beyond. Even with so much ambient light around, the stars were so vivid here! Camera settings: Nikon D750 with 16-35mm f4 lens ISO 3200, 25s @ f4

The triple waterfall of Kirkjufellsfoss crashing down a hill in front of its namesake mountain. Even on days with moody weather, Iceland is still breathtakingly beautiful.

The gorgeous Lip Falls near Beechmont. I always want to stay much longer here, partially because the water is such a nice temperature to stand in as I take photos, and partially because I am doing my best to avoid the steep staircase that leads out of here!
