The Angel on the Bridge, Henley, August 2020 The Angel on the Bridge (Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, England) is apparently one of the most photographed and painted pubs in England, perhaps due to its architecture and its prime riverside location on the River Thames. The inn dates from 1728 and is of course a listed building. Here's my monochrome take on it. Date: 4th August 2020.

I joined Thames Division in The metropolitan Police in the 1970's. This was the sort of police boat I started learning to cox. It was a single screw boat, with a perkins diesel engine. A tough little boat that could take all the knocks and had a towing post for pulling drifting barges and broken down boats. Oil on a small canvas board

The Dartford crossing of the River Thames

Morden Wharf is a 19 acre regeneration site on Greenwich Peninsula. The major riverside regeneration site, formerly a sweeteners refinery, is adjacent to the O2 Arena with 500 metres of Thames river frontage and plays a crucial part in the delivery of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s masterplan proposals for the western side of the Greenwich Peninsula. Leading international architecture practice OMA are the masterplanner/lead architect on the mixed-use development and are developing their initial thoughts for the site

The River Thames at Pangbourne. This is the scene just below the weir before it flows under the toll bridge at Whitchurch and on past Pangbourne Meadows. There has been a toll bridge here since 1792, the original being wooden. The present iron bridge was constructed in 1902 and has recently been refurbished. This image was captured on a bright afternoon in early February when the Thames was high and flowing fast.

Halfpenny Bridge at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, right at the southern tip of the Cotswolds. This bridge is the last road crossing over the River Thames before the river becomes un-navigable. Just further upstream through the arch it gradually becomes narrower and shallower - no place for river cruisers! This bridge dates from 1792 and its name stems from the toll paid by pedestrians to cross, this ending in 1839. Lechlade is a market town very close to the border with Oxfordshire.

Swan Upping is an annual census, by the British Crown, of the swans of the River Thames. It is an annual ceremony in England in which mute swans on the River Thames are rounded up, caught, ringed, and then released.

'Nice Item' - an aptly named narrowbooat moored up against the Thames Path at Lechlade, Gloucestershire. This is about as far upstram as you can get on the thames as after Lechlade it becomes narrower and shallower! In the background is the parish church of St Lawrence at Lechlade its spire being a local landmark. Lechlade is at the southern tip of the Cotswolds and is very close to the Oxfordshire border. This image has added textures in the style of an oil painting.

Just upstream is Sonning Lock and nearby is The Mill, now a theatre.

A white painted house on the banks of the River Thames at Mill End, Hambleden in Buckinghamshire. This lovely stretch of the river is where the Chiltern Hills meet the Thames Valley and unsuprisingly is the setting for many TV programmes and a number of films. This image was captured from Hambledon Weir, the longest on the river. Nearby is the iconic Hambleden Mill, now luxury flats. A digital drawing from my original photograph.

A narrowboat is moored next to the Thames Path At Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. On the left is Rod Eyot (or Ait), an island with several chalets and a brick cottage - only accessible by boat! Further ahead is Marsh Lock and weir. The Thames Path is a long-distance National trail from the Cotswolds to London. Picturesque Henley is most noted for the annual Royal Regatta which attracts top rowers from all over the world. This is a digital pencil drawing.

A mudlark is someone who scavenges in river mud for items of value, a term used especially to describe those who scavenged this way in London during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

I found an old sepia photo of the construction of Tower Bridge in The Thames Police Museum, and asked to turn it into a painting. I only had the stern of the ship. After research in the London Docklands museum, with the help of the curator, we found that a ship called the 'SS Ruahine' may have been up there during this period, so I was able to paint the whole ship from a very faded photo of her. It also shows the local boys nicknamed, The Mudlarks, playing in the dity Thames water, and a Police rowing galley with three officers nearby. A very detailed painting on a 100 by 80 cm canvas in oil. It took months to complete, but now you can enjoy it in print, a little bit of London's history not to be missed captured in oils. Tower Bridge, London

It is amazing that even though these glass marbles from old Codd bottles are cloudy and scuffed you can still see the shape of the windows in the reflection on the right. These were recovered from deposits after the River Thames was dredged in the 1880's.
