The sloth can reach 69 centimeters in length. It has dense fur and can either have a short tail or not. The fur is usually grayish-brown or golden. Sometimes it has greenish tones because of algae that cling to its fur. Algae protect it from predators as it helps it blend in with the foliage of trees. Sloths may have two or three toes on each paw. The fingers have long, curved claws, which they use to cling to branches. Those with two toes spend most of their time hanging from trees on all fours. Three-toed ones prefer to sit on branches rather than hang from them.
