The blue oval guys started developing the Edsel in 1955, based on polling data from car shoppers, but unfortunately, the company disregarded much of the data from the polls and plowed ahead with what they thought consumers should want. The marketing team then proceeded to overpromise the Edsel through a yearlong teaser campaign, promising the car of the future... something the Edsel clearly was not. When the first 1958 models were revealed in 1957, most people simply didn't think the Edsel looked very good. The cars were also saddled with quality and reliability issues from the very beginning, and coupled with a higher than average price point, the Edsel made for a tough sell, with approximately 116,000 sales between 1957 and 1959.
