The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a species of large, endangered soaring bird native to the western United States. It is one of the largest flying land birds in North America, with an average wingspan of nearly 10 feet. Although the condor once ranged from British Columbia to Mexico, by 1982 its population had been reduced to just 22 individuals, all of which were captured and placed in a captive breeding program.
