Ancient Roman Coins Egyptian Crocodile and Hippopotamus- rear sides of Roman Empire coins, Antoninianus and Denarius. This denarius was issued around 28 BC by Octavian, (Augustus Ceasar). There is a Crocodile image with the inscription, "Egypt (is) Captured." The Hippo image is on the rear side of an antoninianus coin issued around 248 AD by Emperor Phillip the Arab to celebrate the Roman Millenium.
