The weather forecast for an early autumn sunday was possible showers, so we packed a brolly for a walk along Palm Beach & up to the historic Barrenjoey lighthouse. It turned out to be warmer & sunnier than expected. The aqua blue water looked crystal clear & the interesting clouds formed a great backdrop. The caves in Matala (one of the most famous sites in Crete) were used as "homes" from the Neolithic Era, then they were used as a cemetery during the Roman Era and reached the peak of their "glory" during the 60's and 70's when the "Flower Power" generation converted the small fishing village to one of the "capitals" of their movement. Many of the flower children, the hippies, keep returning with their families and show to their sons and daughters the place where they spent their "wild" years, when the dream of a better world did not seem like a utopia. One of the most beautiful beaches of Crete, is located at the western shore of the island, very close to the ancient town of Falasarna, (harbour of ancient Polyrrinia), about 60 km west of Chania (Crete island, Greece) and 20 km west of Kastelli.
