The Little Eagle (Hieraaetus morphnoides) is a very small eagle native to Australasia, measuring 45–55 cm (17–21.5 inches) in length and weighing 815 g (1.8 lb) – roughly the size of a Peregrine Falcon. It tends to inhabit open woodland, grassland and arid regions, shunning dense forest. It is a near relative of both the Palearctic Booted Eagle and, remarkably, the massive but now extinct Haast's Eagle of New Zealand. Photographed in the Adeliade Hills, South Australia. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang" or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. Granite outcrops called Kopjes which are typical of a large part of the southern Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. Pair of Pekin Duck (Anas platyrhynchos domestica or Anas peking) swimming on a small wetland. It is a breed of domesticated duck used primarily for egg and meat production. It was bred from the Mallard in China. Photographed at a suburban wetland, Oakland Native Fish Sanctuary in Adelaide, at some stage having escaped or been released from a domestic situation. The Secretarybird or Secretary Bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. (Featured in The Birds.) It is instantly recognizable having an eagle-like body on crane-like legs which increases the bird’s height to around 1.3 m, 4 ft tall. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Genus Sagittarius. It lives on the eastern coast of Madagascar and typically inhabits rainforests and dwells on trees. The Madagascar day gecko feeds on insects and nectar. Seen in the forsts of Perinet. Indian Ocean. The Brolga (Grus rubicunda), formerly known as the "Native Companion", is a bird in the crane family. The bird has also been given the name "Australian Crane", a term coined in 1865 by well-known ornithological artist John Gould in his Birds of Australia. The Brolga is a common gregarious wetland bird species in tropical and eastern Australia, well known for its intricate mating dance. It is the official bird emblem of the state of Queensland.
