Defunct Washington Tapers Basketball Team

The Nationals began in 1946 when Italian immigrant Daniel Biasone spent $5,000 to buy the rights to found the team in the NBL. The Nationals were the NBL's eastern most team and were partly formed to counter the rival BAA's presence in major cities such as New York and Philadelphia. The Nationals, along with the NBL, merged with the BAA in 1949 to form the NBA. In 1963, following the Warriors relocation to San Francisco, the Nationals moved to Philadelphia and became the Sixers.

In 1972, the Seneca Flyers became a part of the OPJHL. In 1975, they bought out the Newmarket Redmen of the Mid-Ontario Junior B Hockey League and moved to become the Newmarket Flyers. The Redmen dated back to the 1920s and were at one point a top level Junior "C" team. In 1986, the Newmarket Flyers folded.

The Juan de Fuca Whalers were a Canadian Junior A hockey team based in Victoria, BC playing in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League from 1986 to 1988.

The Baltimore Bullets were an NBA team named after an earlier Bullets team from the 1940s–'50s. The team played in Baltimore from 1963 (after moving from Chicago and rebranding from the Zephyrs) until 1974 when it moved 40 miles east and became the Capital Bullets and later the Washington Bullets.

The Pittsburgh Rebels were a baseball club based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1913 to 1915. The team was a member of the short-lived Federal League. The team was originally called the Pittsburgh Stogies after an earlier Pittsburgh team that played in the Union Association in 1884, but became known as the Rebels by the end of the 1914 season. The Oakland Oaks were a charter member of the original American Basketball Association and the first West Coast basketball team to win a major professional championship. Formed in February 1967, the team played in the ABA during the 1967–68 and 1968–69 seasons at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The team colors were green and gold. The team was sold and moved to Washington, D.C. for the 1969–70 season, where it was renamed the Washington Caps.

The Boston Bolts played in the American Soccer League from its founding in 1987 until the league folded in 1990.

In 1960, Portland was granted a franchise in the minor league Western Hockey League (WHL) for its newly built 10,500 seat Memorial Coliseum, and the Buckaroos name was reincarnated. The new Buckaroos were composed mostly of players and coaches from the New Westminster Royals, including its head coach Hal Laycoe. The Buckaroos went on to beat the Seattle Totems in the league championship and win the Lester Patrick Cup in its first season of existence. That 1960–61 Buckaroos team was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

The Dayton Jets were an American minor professional ice hockey team in Dayton, Ohio. The Jets played in the Continental Hockey League for the 1985–86 season and the All-American Hockey League for the 1986–87 season. The club merged with the Troy Sabres to form the Miami Valley Sabres after the 1987 season.

The Cleveland Barons were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1976 to 1978. They were a relocation of the California Golden Seals franchise that had played in Oakland since 1967. After just two seasons, the team merged with the Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars). As a result, the NHL operated with 17 teams during the 1978–79 season.

The Salem Redbirds were a minor league baseball team based in Salem, Virginia. The city of Salem has hosted minor league baseball each summer since 1957. Prior to the 1980 season, the Salem team was called the Pirates, associated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then the team changed affiliation to the Padres and changed the name to the Redbirds. In 1984 the affiliation changed again to the Texas Rangers, but the team kept the Redbird name until 1986, when they changed to the Buccaneers.

Originally called the Pittsburgh Pipers, they were a charter franchise of the ABA and captured the first league title. The team played their home games in Pittsburgh's Civic Arena.

The Chicago Rockets was an American football team that played in the All-America Football Conference from 1946 to 1949. During the 1949 season, the team was known as the Chicago Hornets. Unlike the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and Baltimore Colts, the franchise did not join the National Football League (NFL) prior to the 1950 season.

The Reno Silver Sox were a professional baseball team based in Reno, Nevada, in the United States. They were a member of the North Division of the independent Golden Baseball League, which is not affiliated with either Major League Baseball or Minor League Baseball. From 2006 to 2008, they played their home games at William Peccole Park, on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Tri-City Apollos were a minor league football team that represented Bay City, Midland and Saginaw, Michigan. The team lasted just one season in the Continental Football League in the autumn of 1969. The team folded along with the rest of the Continental League during the winter of 1969-70.

The St. Louis Stars, originally the St. Louis Giants, were a Negro league baseball team that competed independently from as early as 1906 to 1919, and then joined the Negro National League (NNL) for the duration of their existence. After the 1921 season, the Giants were sold by African-American promoter Charlie Mills to Dick Kent and Dr. Sam Sheppard, who built a new park and renamed the club the Stars. As the Stars, they eventually built one of the great dynasties in Negro league history, winning three pennants in four years from 1928 to 1931.

The Cape Cod Cubs were a professional ice hockey team that played at the Cape Cod Coliseum in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. The Cubs started play as an expansion franchise in the Eastern Hockey League in 1972, the same year their home arena, the Cape Cod Coliseum, was constructed. They were an affiliate of the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins.

The Winged Footers, or Mercury Footers, was a team in the American Amateur Hockey League, an amateur ice hockey league in the United States. The league was founded in 1896, and was based in New York City and New Jersey.

The Topeka Owls was the primary name of the minor league baseball franchise based in Topeka, Kansas from 1939–1942 and again from 1946–1954. The Topeka minor league team, starting in the 1860s, had other names over the years as well, including the Capitals, Hawks, Senators, Jayhawks, Kaws, and Populists.
