August sunrises in the Scottish Isles are early, but it's absolutely worth the early start to see this! Portree Harbour was quiet, broken only by the squawking of the occasional seagull and the sound of a boat starting off and motoring out to sea; it was a calm way to start a day of touring around some of the most frequented tourist spots in the Scottish Isles.

Go ahead, guess where in the world you might find this beach....I bet you didn't guess Scotland's Outer Hebrides, did you? Well, that's where we found it -- on the Isle of Lewis. It's called Dalmore Beach and is absolute perfection.

Looking over the straight that separates the Isle of Mull from the mainland of Scotland, on a fresh spring day, towards the snow dusted peaks of Ardnamurchan.

Puffy clouds float over the standing stones of Callanish on the Isle of Lewis, giving it more of an otherwordly feel than it already had, especially given the people walking around the site chanting in unknown languages. A very interesting place to spend the morning :)

This view comes from a trip I did to the Outer Hebrides quite a few years back now. It had been raining all day, but just a few minutes before sunset (at 10pm) the clouds rolled away and the landscape came alive in the golden glow of the sun. The location is the blackhouse village at Garenin on the Isle of Lewis, and I have painted it in oil on a 12x12 inch board using my wet into wet technique. If you have OS Explorer map 460 you may recognise this scene - and thats because its my photo - the source for this painting!
