The better commercial chainsaws were primarily manufactured in Germany and when World War II interrupted their availability to North America, new manufacturers sprang up. One such company was the Canadian firm, Industrial Engineering Limited (IEL), who began making top tier chainsaws in 1939 to fill the void, making them the oldest manufacturer of chainsaws in North America. IEL saws are still prized by woodworkers and collectors alike, with most still running like a top.

Initial logging enterprises in mid-1800s Washington State existed to supply timber to California’s Gold Rush and the population growth it precipitated. But when the Northern Pacific railroad opened a direct rail link over the Cascades to Tacoma in 1887, and with Wisconsin and Minnesota already grossly depleted by deforestation, Washington and the Pacific Northwest quickly assumed the role of primary timber supplier to the nation, ensuring the region’s rapid development as it entered the 20th century and 'Washington's toothpicks' became an increasingly common sight as loggers hauled them down the highways and byways.

Windsor Forestry Tools was founded in Milan, Tennessee in 1948, specializing in the manufacturing of products for chainsaws. Often referring to their product line as 'The Windsor Cutting Train' in marketing materials and catalogs, Windsor's primary product line consisted of chainsaw bars, chains, and sprockets for all major manufacturer's chainsaws. The company continued to produce their line for decades until being acquired by a Swedish firm in the mid-'80s, something that would be repeated several times before the company's demise some time around 2010.

Monark Silver King was founded in Chicago in 1934 and specialized in the design and manufacturing of bicycles, eventually adding motorized bicycles to their line-up. This made for a natural segue into other small engine powered devices which included lawn mowers and chain saws, both of which were in demand in post-war America, so in 1945, the firm constructed a brand-new state-of-the-art factory on Grand Avenue to facilitate the manufacture of these items. Much like their bicycles, Silver King chainsaws were highly regarded for their original design and quality workmanship and today, they remain highly valued among chainsaw collectors.

The Hayes Manufacturing Company Limited was a Vancouver-based Canadian manufacturer of heavy trucks known for their durability and a revolving bunk system. Founded in 1920, Hayes built both highway and off-road trucks, particularly for the logging industry, and on a smaller scale, also manufactured buses. The Signal Company acquired a controlling stake in the company in 1969, and in 1971 renamed it Hayes Trucks. The Signal Company, then parent of Mack Trucks, acquired a controlling share in Hayes Manufacturing in 1969. The company was renamed Hayes Trucks in 1971 and then in 1975, Signal sold the company to Paccar, which closed the Hayes plants. Hayes hood ornaments were a die-cast, chrome-plated, 5-pound bear or a bronze cast bear.

In 1928, the Zellerbach Paper Company merged with the Crown Willamette Paper Company to form publicly-traded Crown Zellerbach Corporation. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, the company had assets of nearly $100 million, over 350,000 acres of timber, and paper mills throughout the Pacific Coast capable of producing 1,450 tons of paper daily. It expanded steadily throughout the '30s and substantially during the second world war, when European paper manufacturers no longer exported to the United States. In 1947, it started producing glossy, coated paper for high-end magazines. In the '50s, Crown Zellerbach was the second-largest landholder in the American West, and in the '60s, they diversified and expanded internationally.
