While wooden skateboard ramps may seem rather common nowadays, back in the '70s, skateboarders were riding backyard pools, and eventually in dedicated skate parks with cement bowls. After riding a set of massive concrete pipes in the Arizona desert, skateboarder Tom Stewart decided to design what would become the world's first half pipe. With $250 in supplies, he built a ramp in his front yard in Encinitas, California, and soon realized he had created something very special as people were coming to skate his ramp or just watch skaters doing their thing. Tom enlisted his architect brother's help in drawing up plans based on his design, and began selling them through magazines as 'Rampage' at $20 a pop.

The 'skateboarding is not a crime' motto has become one of the most famous expressions — and stickers — in skateboard history. Skateboarding has always been a city sport that interacts with architecture, buildings, urban objects, landscapes, and spaces. As skateboarding increasing in popularity, skateboarders faced curfews, prohibitive legislation, and bans from public areas. Soon, tickets and fines were soon being issued across America and Europe, and police officers and security guards quickly became skateboarders' worst nightmares. After the introduction of no skateboarding legislation, skateboarders were suddenly regarded as common criminals, getting harassed and having their boards confiscated.

In the early days of skateboarding, flexible skateboard decks were highly desirable, and in 1975, Powerflex came up with one of the most flexible decks yet. Made with what they described as pull-truded, high-mat, roving-content fiberglass, these decks were not only flexible, but could withstand over 2 tons of weight without breakage. Powerflex proved this in several ways, but the most memorable was having an elephant plant a foot on a complete skateboard. In addition to making decks, they also made some pretty innovative wheels using their own unique compounds and offered them in more colors and sizes than other manufacturers at the time.
