Tel Aviv, Yard In Shadows

This work depicts a series of roof tops in Tel Aviv. I used to live here and have always been taken with these little parcels of space that live between city and sky, places where at night one can sit under stars. They are oddly private spots, accessed by metal doors and shared with baking hot metal water containers. Here the tar melts, plants wither under the glare. And yet in the yards between buildings are patches of dark shadow, of intense shade, relics of Eden, scented by orange blossom and wild mint. The work radiates heat and has an intense realism.

A sultry evening, a time of sweat and humidity, of night as thick as treacle, redolent of orange blossom, pizza dough and the tantalising passing clouds of expensive perfume. A dusk of pink sky, the magic punctuated by the incessant sounds of the city, scooters and buses, car horns and Mizrachi music from passing radios. I find the bakery, hot and neon-lit, and it transports me to a time long ago, memories of taste and texture and interiors that once looked like this. Rows of oily filled pastries tempt me, stuffed with meat and potato, dates and nuts and honey. This work is a wonderful gift, a great souvenir of Israel

In the stillness of the late afternoon evening twilight filters through the frosted glass of a Bauhaus window, warming my face. It feels timeless, or certainly as though the decades had somehow melted away and I was in the 1930s. Particles of dust float silently. From the various flats I hear muffled noises, the piercing beeps of the radio news on the hour, the sound of someone practising the piano, an animated mother daughter argument from further up the floors. The painting focuses on one landing, and what is below and above remains a mystery. The colours are muted, earthy, full of shadow and the windows a gentle play of soft colour. A perfect gift, a great addition to any collection of architecturally-themed work.

A famous Hebrew song holds the promise of summer on the balcony, surrounded by only good things. I think of it as I stroll through a quiet residential area of Tel Aviv, the air cool after a squally shower. Yet spring is coming and the air is redolent of jasmin, pine and oleander. I love the architecture of the apartments, a meeting of concrete and modernism, once smart white walls stained and eroded by the salty sea air and furnace-like heat of the summer. Patches of shadow and the reflection of the sky on glass. And of course the balconies sit empty, awaiting next year perhaps, when we shall sit there surrounded by good things. We only need to wait and see. This work is rich in realism and detail and is a perfect gift, a great addition ...

Another Bauhaus In Tel Aviv

There is something eerie about shared stairwells, paradoxically familiar and alien. There is symbolism too, of ascent, windows with tantalizing glimpses of sky. I linger, alone with my breathing and my thoughts. From behind closed doors comes the sound of a voice in Hebrew, somewhere from Jerusalem perhaps, echoey, announcing ominous developments on the border. From another comes the bitter-sweet notes of the piano, from another place decades away. I smell food, fried onion perhaps, and freshly roasted coffee. I wanted to capture the scene. The work includes small elements of collage, and makes a wonderful addition to any collection.

In the south of Tel Aviv, I spotted this yellow building. The south of the city drew me in, a contrast to where I used to live. It was harsher here, tattier and yet I could strip away the layers of clutter to see how it once was, when the buildings were new and white. A time of new beginnings, of hope and dread and youth. Feral cats stare at me, their eyes malevolent and suspicious. It is cool, a welcome freshness, a breeze from the Mediterranean. I wander into the open stairwells, places of dark shadow and stone, places of clutter, where dozens of letter boxes are bent out of shape, stickers faded and layered like papier maché. I smell fried food, muffled voices, an aroma of baking. On the hour, four long beeps signal the start of a new...

The Red House, Tel Aviv

A terrace on a rooftop. The Mediterranean breeze, the muffled sounds of the city below. The sound of car horns, the staccato and distant voice of a radio presenter. Time for a long, cool drink, time to relax. The scent of oleander and thyme and safe, of coffee and baking. The work is rich in life and colour. A blast of heat. A reminder of better times around the corner. An ideal gift. A great addition to any collection.
