After having to wait at the same trucking company each week, she told the owner that she should just buy the business so that it could be run properly. To her surprise, the owner called and asked if she was interested. Turns out, she was and in January 1946, she was president of her own trucking company. Starting with 10 trucks that came with the business, she positioned Eagle Motor Lines as a specialty carrier focused primarily on flatbed work. 20 years later, Eagle Motor Lines had 340 trucks and over 500 trailers, operating across nearly half of the USA with annual revenue approaching $20 million. Not bad for a bookkeeper, huh?

In 1946, investment banker Scribner Birlenbach decided that he wanted to get into the trucking business. He began his venture by purchasing a Los Angeles trucking company with 15 tractors and 22 trailers, calling it Transcon Lines, with a plan to turn it into a major transcontinental carrier. By 1962, Transcon had over 1,100 units covering over 14,000 route miles. In three decades time, Transcon had purchased 27 trucking companies, including Kramer-Consolidated Freight Lines in 1978, which made them a true coast-to-coast carrier. Transcon's work force was 3,829 people strong with 5,700 pieces of equipment and 117 terminals in 38 states as of 1981, but as the '80s marched on, Transcon's fortunes began to turn.

After the war, Charles ‘Champ’ Carpenter opened Champ’s Bait & Tackle in Colchester, Vermont, right off of Lake Champlain. Champ got his nickname after winning countless fishing derby’s and competitions, something he always attributed to his homemade lures and bait blends. By the late ’60s, Champ decided to play up sharing a name with the mythical creature said to inhabit Lake Champlain and added a drawing of Champ (or Champy) to his signage and packaging and the rest, as they say, is history. Wait, there’s a lake monster named Champ? Yes, yes there is. Since the late 1800s, there have been over 300 reported sightings of Champ, the mythical creature said to inhabit Lake Champlain. Champ’s folklore can be traced back to Iroquois legends.

The year was 1946 when a small hot rod shop opened up on Gratiot Avenue in Detroit and by 1960, they had expanded to half a dozen stores throughout Michigan and were known as the 'world's largest hot rod shops.' Unlike a lot of speed shops, Gratiot Auto Supply locations weren't just fronts for mail order dealers - they had hardware on the shelves, so no waiting for that new set of headers for your small block to come in from Los Angeles - they were in stock and ready to rock. From cross members and frame rails to cheater slicks and crate motors, they stocked literally everything a guy would need to build a car from the ground up, something no other retail store could come close to pulling off.
