In 1965, 1st Battalion (ABN), 8th Cavalry Regiment, the "Jumping Mustangs", arrived in Vietnam, and participated in numerous campaigns in South Vietnam and Cambodia. The battalion was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations, the Valorous Unit Citation, and four soldiers were awarded with the nation's highest honor, the Medal of Honor.

Specialist 4th Class Jim Brannen who served in Vietnam during 1969 and 1970 in the Military Assistant Command Vietnam (MACV) and later the 4th Infantry Division agrees: Not a lot of people actually know that the whole decks were aces. I knew. I saw many of them in the Pleiku area since the 1st Air Cavalry was at An Khe. The 4th Infantry took over An Khe in March 1970. There were plenty of those ace of spades decks around. I wish I had kept some. I did see a few of the cards used. It is hard to talk about it now but during the war things were different. Some soldiers would place the cards on the eyes of a dead Viet Cong. It meant that the card was the last thing they saw. The Viet Cong really feared the Air Cavalry.

As of 2008 the 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry was composed of a Headquarters and Headquarters Troop (Stetson); three Air Cavalry Troops, A Troop (Shadow), B Troop (Blackjack), C Troop (Crazy Horse); an Aviation Maintenance Troop, D Troop (Work Horse); and Forward Support Troop, E Troop (Iron Horse).

As of 2008 the 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry was composed of a Headquarters and Headquarters Troop (Stetson); three Air Cavalry Troops, A Troop (Shadow), B Troop (Blackjack), C Troop (Crazy Horse); an Aviation Maintenance Troop, D Troop (Work Horse); and Forward Support Troop, E Troop (Iron Horse).

The 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment came back into existance originally organized as G Troop, 17th Cavalry Regiment, and the 7th Squadron of the 17th Cavalry was formally reactivated on 25 November 1966, and equipped and trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky. At the same time, the Squadron adopted the nickname "The Ruthless Riders."

8th Cavalry, 1st Battalion (Airborne);11th Air Assault Division (Test) and brought to full strength by transfer of specialized elements of the 2nd Infantry Division. As a part of this reorganization, the 1st Battalion (Airborne) 188th Infantry was redesignated the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry Regiment and the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 511th Infantry was redesignated the 2nd Battalion, (Airborne), 8th Cavalry Regiment.

The 5th Cavalry Regiment was reorganized in August 1963 as the 1st and 2nd Battalions, 5th Cavalry Regiment and later as the 3rd Squadron, 5th Armored Cavalry. The units arrived at Fort Benning in 1965, and then proceeded to South Vietnam as air and armored cavalry. The 1st Cavalry Division was the first full division committed to the Vietnam War.

To this day, the unit's special designation is "First Regiment of Dragoons".[1] While they were the First Regiment of Dragoons another unit designated the 1st Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1855 and in 1861 was re-designated as the 4th Cavalry Regiment (units were renumbered based on seniority and it was the fourth oldest mounted regiment in active service). The First Dragoons became the 1st Cavalry Regiment since they were the oldest mounted regiment.

The division fought in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1970.[ The unit was redesignated as Aviation Company, 1st Infantry Division and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas on 21 April 1972. On 2 September 1981 the unit was reorganized and redesignated as 1st Aviation Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas. Organized as an airborne and airmobile unit was immediately deployed to the Republic of Vietnam as the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry, the "Jumping Mustangs". Additionally, F Troop, 8th Cavalry served as a recon element for the 196th Infantry Brigade.

In May 1965, two battalions of the 503rd Infantry deployed as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade to Vietnam as the first major U.S. Army ground combat unit to be deployed, joined later by 4-503rd Inf and 3-503rd Inf (bearing the lineages of the former Company D and Company C, 503rd PIR, respectively). During its six years in Vietnam, the four battalions of the 503rd participated in fourteen campaigns, earning two more Presidential Unit Citations and a Meritorious Unit Commendation. The 2nd Bn (Abn), 503rd Inf participated in the only combat jump of the war during "Operation Junction City" in 1967. It redeployed to the U.S. in July 1971, having the distinction of being one of the last units to leave Vietnam

The 9th Air Cav ushered in a new era of combat called, air assault. These teams were composed of aero-weapons (Reds), aero-scout (Whites), and aero-rifle (Blues). Together, ground and air reconnaissance teams patrolled the Vietnam countryside in search of the enemy. Once located, the infantry (Blues) would insert (and extract) via helicopter or foot to engage the enemy with support of their aero scouts and aero weapons. These teams earned the nickname of "Headhunters." This concept differed from conventional front line warfare typical in prior land warfare. During the Vietnam war, the 1st of the 9th Cavalry earned 3 Presidential Unit citations and 5 Valorous Unit Citations.

In the later part of 1966, the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry (Armored Reconnaissance), went to the Republic of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War (1966–1972) operating in the II Corps Area as part of the 4th Infantry Division. It received its first Valorous Unit Award in May 1969 for actions at LZ Oasis against a battalion sized enemy force. The 1st Squadron of the 10th, with the 4th Infantry Division, earned 12 campaign streamers and other awards in Vietnam. In April 1972, Troop H/10th Air Cavalry was formed (with assets from the disbanding Troop C, 7th Squadron-17th Cavalry Regiment) and placed under the 17th Aviation Group at Pleiku. The Ruthless Riders deployed to Vietnam 28 October 1967 as a separate Air Cavalry Squadron of the 1st Aviation Brigade. The Squadron, part of the 17th Combat Aviation Group, established its base camp at Camp Enari, near Pleiku. The Squadron mission was to provide combat reconnaissance and security for the 4th Infantry Division and other allied units in Western II Corps. Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, A Troop, B Troop, C Troop and D Troop were combat operational by November and based out of Camp Enari.
