Before colonization the indigenous peoples of what is now called North and South America, had over a thousand tribes throughout the land, nearly 61 million people. Between only 1492 and 1600, nearly 90% of the indigenous people had died through disease carried over, enslavement or murder. Today, there are tribes still recognized across the land. However, even within the minimalized rights of indigenous tribes, there are still black indigenous called Freedmen who are still to this day denied their heritage through gatekeeping. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October, on October 9 this year, to honor the cultures and histories of the Native American people. The day is centered around reflecting on their tribal roots and the tragic stories that hurt but strengthened their communities.

The Otoe are a Midwestern Native American tribe. The Otoe language, Chiwere, is part of the Siouan family and closely related to that of the related Iowa and Missouri tribes. Historically, the Otoe lived as a semi-nomadic people on the Central Plains along the Missouri River in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri . They lived in elm-bark lodges while they farmed, and used tipis while traveling, like many other Plains tribes. They often left their villages to hunt buffalo. The Sioux are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government in North America. The term can refer to any ethnic group within the Great Sioux Nation or any of the nation's many language dialects.
