A corner of a patio of the converted old mill of Bornos above the village of Las Negras near my home. A lovely subject to paint with many different tectures, the stone walls, metal bike and chimney, wooden doors and the plants. Lovely colours too and typical Mediterranean plants – vines, cacti, succulents and geraniums. I used a free, sketchy style of watercolour painting for this work. There is more in this painting than my recent sketches of beaches and boats but the work is not so detailed as in my usual style so I have priced the original painting accordingly. Andalusian Lavender and Lemons Doorway

Chickens beneath my nectarine tree. It has been hot, sunny and quite humid here and we have had the occasional thunderstorm. As a result my finca, in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Spain, is looking particularly lush with rampant weeds. Before we cut back the weeds I wanted to capture the lush greens in watercolour. First I arranged the composition, including the old wheelbarrow. I then encouraged my chickens to gather by spreading some corn around. The third of my small watercolours of Granada. Calle Victoria is one of my favourite streets to paint in the Albaicin. The lovely old buildings in the foreground combine with the Alhambra in the background provide a perfect composition. Rooftops of Cádiz, May 2022 The Spanish city of Cadiz (Andalusia, Spain) is remarkable in that it is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in western Europe. The city was founded by the Phoenicians and is built on a narrow strip of coastal land roughly midway between Gibraltar and the Portuguese border. Archaeological remains have been uncovered here dating back to the 12th century BC. Date: 17th May 2022.

A quaint, sunlit street lined with traditional houses leads through a picturesque village in La Alpujarra Almerienes, Almeria, Andalusia, Spain. The scene is peaceful, with a clear sky above and a backdrop of rolling hills, while bright flowers add splashes of color to the warm tones of the buildings. A quaint, cozy scene portrays a white plastered house with a classic lantern hanging from an exterior wall. Subtle shadows create a sense of depth and time of day, while surrounding foliage and mountains add to the serene ambiance. A small painting in acrylics of old buildings in the highest street of Alboloduy. The old cottages and caves in La Alpujarra Almeriense are always located at the top of the villages, high above the pretty squares and grand houses at the bottom, but it is worth walking up the steep, narrow streets as I always find interesting subjects to paint at the top.

Plaza Bib Rambla. I have painted this lovely square in the centre of Granada several times. At the heart of the “Christian” part of the city it is surrounded by beautiful 19th Century buildings and overlooked by the great Cathedral nearby. It is a lined with cafe’s and shops along the sidewalks and is a pretty spot in summer with its leafy lime trees and flowers around the central fountain adding to colour of the visitors strolling around. This farm is just a short walk from my home in the village of Las Negras in the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata, Almeria, Southern Spain. When I go there to buy vegetables from Manuel I always speak to his donkeys. The last time I visited one of the donkeys was standing behind an old wooden gate framed by a tree. I thought the composition and the play of light and shadow would make a good painting. I also decided to include one of the pale ginger farm cats. The original painting is for sale for 200 euros. The fences of the beach, which slow down the advance of the dune, retaining the sand that propitiate its growth while retaining — also — the sand, end up being devoured and turned into a kind of skeleton that runs along the back of the sandy snake.

We have been fortunate to have had some spectacular sunrises at Las Negras during the last couple of weeks. The sun rising over the Mediterranean is a beautiful sight and the little fishing boats on the beach add to the composition and are great to draw. The old, Moorish quarter of Granada, the Albaicin, needs to be explored on foot. Even the widest of the cobbled streets can only cope with one way traffic. The lovely, old buildings are fascinating but often you will also get a view of the Alhambra on the hill opposite in the background. By walking up and down the steep lanes though you will come across some wonderful street scenes to paint and draw but the narrowness of the alleys makes it difficult to compose a painting. I met Naomi last week when she was with a group from Holland on an art’s and crafts holiday at Cortijo La Paloma in Las Negras. The group were in the gardens having a break from some Latin American dancing with a Cuban instructor. Naomi has the kind of face that stands out in a crowd and I wanted to paint her portrait so i asked her if she would pose for me.
