The nearly half million cuneiform tablets excavated from ancient Near Eastern sites provide us with ample evidence for the uses of music in ancient Sumer - Babylonia - and Assyria. This lyre was found at the Great Death Pit at the Royal Cemetery, Ur. The silver cow's head decorating the front has inlaid eyes of shell and lapis lazuli. The edges of the sound box have a narrow border of shell and lapis lazuli inlay. From Ur, southern Mesopotamia, Iraq. Early dynastic period, circa 2500 BCE. The British Museum, London.

Old Babylonian blessing (or greeting) directed at a man or boy (for grammatical reasons: Akkadian distinguishes male and female pronouns for "you". You can find a female version here .) Phrases such as these were used in letter openings to greet the recipient (like a modern “I hope you’re well”). The Babylonian-Akkadian text reads: ilū aššumija dāriš ūmim liballiṭūka, „May the Gods forever keep you well because of me“. The “because of me” part, although it makes the translation sound a bit awkward, is essential: it implies that the well-wisher will take it upon him- or herself to make the gods favour you by means of prayers and offerings.
