Chicago - Community Area 48 - Calumet Heights

While the real Calumet has been a ghost town for decades, a fictionalized version of the Colorado town was depicted in the 1984 war film, Red Dawn. Calumet is the movie's central setting, and is presented not as a tiny ghost town, but as a vibrant community with a substantial population. Red Dawn was actually shot in the town of Las Vegas, New Mexico, which was the stand-in for the fictionalized Calumet. The iconic 'Calumet Says Howdy' mural was painted as part of the movie's set dressing in 1984 and is still there today. As a matter of fact, the mural has been restored a coupled of times and looks as good as ever.
