Description: The Pink Motel in Cherokee, North Carolina, was a classic piece of roadside Americana, opened in 1957 by local entrepreneur Lois Queen Farthing. After a laundry mix-up at a previous business, she chose pink sheets to easily identify her linens—a decision that soon expanded to the motel’s paint, décor, and ultimately its name. At one point, nearly everything—from matchbooks to soap to toilet paper—was pink, though she later introduced complementary colors. Known for its neon fairy sign and prime location near the Great Smoky Mountains, it became a favorite stop for travelers. Though it closed in 2020, the building still stands, and its restored sign remains a Cherokee landmark.
