Beaudesert, a village and civil parish in the Stratford-on-Avon district of Warwickshire, England, half a mile east across the River Alne to the north and west of Henley-in-Arden. St Nicholas church, it was built in 1070 and despite restoration in the 19th century still contains many Norman parts.

A very different Georgian style church with medieval tower and a magnificent interior, the altar piece is a copy of the Da Vinci painting of the Last Supper. Only the 15th Century tower remains of the original medical church . Between 1734 and 1744 the main body of the church was rebuilt in the Georgian classical style. It was designed by Francis Smith of Warwick and greatly influenced by James Gibbs the designer of St Martins in the Fields in Trafalgar Square. St Michaels Church, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland with the top of the Royal Palace of linlithgow just visible behind it. “St Michael is kinde to strangers”. So runs the motto of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. St Michael is the patron saint of the town and, in the form of the ancient church of that name, he still stands guard above its inhabitants, both residents and strangers alike. Although it is undoubtedly of earlier origin the first mention of “the great church of Linlithgow” is in a charter of 1138 in which King David I gifted it “with all its chapels, lands and other rights” to the Cathedral of St Andrews. On 22nd May 1242, the Church of St Michael of Linlithgow was consecrated.

The church looked beautiful in the early morning light with a sprinkling of snow on the ground.

Carriden Church, Carriden, Bon'ess, Falkirk District, Scotland. Carriden new Church was opened in 1909. The ruin of Carriden Old Church at Carriden, Bon'ess, Falkirk District, Scotland. Carriden Old Church was built in 1766 to replace the medieval church adjacent to Carriden House. It is T-shaped in plan and finished in simple Georgian style. An aedicule was attached to the north side of the building in 1771 to protect the monument to Sir William Maxwell of Carriden. A tower with a spire and a session house were added around 1840. When the new church was opened in 1909 the roof was taken off the old one and it is now a picturesque ruin. St Margaret's in Burnham Norton (apparently meaning North Town) is one of the round towered churches typical of Norfolk. It is one of the six surviving medieval churches in the Burnham area, the round tower displaying much of its Norman origins. In the churchyard is buried Richard Woodget, master of the sailing clipper Cutty Sark which can be seen at Greenwich, London. Burnham Norton is not far from the market town of Burnham Market and is only a short distance - about half a mile - from the sea which played an important role in its life. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200

Looking over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordshire to the parish church of St Mary. Dating from the early C12th, it is notable for being the second widest church in England - having five aisles! Abingdon-on-Thames is a lovely ancient market town which although now in Oxfordshire was once the county town of Berkshire! From her the Thames makes its majestic way to Wallingford and from there to Reading before reaching London and ultimately the North Sea. This is a digital art image.

A digital pencil drawing from my original photograph of Holy Trinity church in the West Sussex village of Bosham near the quay. It's steeped in history, the first church being founded in c850 on the site of a Roman basilica. It was replaced in the 10th century by Holy Trinity. Significantly it's mentioned in the Bayeaux Tapestry which shows Harold Godwinson and his followers riding to the church. The daughter of King Canute is said to be buried under the nave.

The church of St Mary the Virgin in the village of Hampstead Norreys in West Berkshire depicted as an oil painting. This lovely church sits in the centre of the village next to the road which leads to Newbury. It's a Grade 1 listed Norman church close to the remains of a motte-and-bailey Norman castle. A blue plaque in the churchyard tells us that the village was recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Hanstede'. The church, dating from the C12th was largely rebuilt in the C13th. The tower is C15th.

Just to the south of Dunfermline's High Street lies one of Scotland's most unusual churches. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland is two very distinct churches, joined in the middle. The effect is unexpected but attractive. The Abbey Church, as the name suggests, was the church serving Dunfermline Abbey. A church probably already existed on this site in 1070, when King Malcolm III married Queen Margaret. Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation here. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland. Work was started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the nave still survives as the western half of the building on view today.

Blairgowrie Old Parish Kirk on the Hill of Blair. Blairgowrie and Rattray (Blàr Ghobharaidh and Raitear in Gaelic, Blairgowrie – likely Scottish Gaelic Blàr Ghobharaidh and Rattray – possibly from an English language cognate of Scottish Gaelic ràth, meaning fortress + a Pictish term cognate with Welsh tref, meaning settlement) is a twin burgh in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Amongst locals, the town is colloquially known simply as “Blair”. The second largest town in Perth & Kinross this twin burgh lies in the Strathmore Valley and straddles the River Ericht, which flows into the River Isla and then the River Tay. Rattray is on the east bank and Blairgowrie is on the west. The town expanded greatly in the 19th century.

St. Nicholas Church in the Parish of Strathbrock, West Lothian, Scotland. The Parish of Strathbrock was created in 1976 when the Parishes of Ecclesmachan (which had become vacant) and Uphall North were united by West Lothian Presbytery. The new parish is a mixture of rural and lightly urban land stretching from the farmlands of Bangour through the villages of Ecclesmachan and Uphall. As a result of boundary changes part of Dechmont and the hamlet of Threemiletown were lost but the housing areas of North West Broxburn were added. The Parish has two beautiful old Churches steeped in history; St Machan in Ecclesmachan and St Nicholas (shown here_) in Uphall. St. Nicholas Church dates from the 12th century.

St Mary's, or Ratho Parish Church on the northern edge of the village of Ratho, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Parts of St Mary's can be dated as far back as the 1100s, and it has been steadily added to and expanded since: to the point where the later extensions almost completely hide the original church. I painted this scene to be used on a Christmas card for the residence of Wapping back in the 80's when I was known as The Wapping Artist. now you can have it in print or even use it yourself as a Christmas card, something unique and not on the mass market.

I don't do many sketches, drawings, or pen and ink, but occasionally get asked to do one, so try my best. Much prefer painting.
